MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry Buccaneers routed the Flyers of Mercy (NY) College on Friday, February 25, 10-2.

In the bottom of the second inning, Barry 2B Brett Rossi grounded into a rare 1-5-2-6-4-3-6 double play after two runners, Alex Meneses and Jesse Naber were caught in the same rundown. The Flyers subsequently took a 1-0 lead in the next half-inning after an RBI single in the third by right fielder Evan Leibowitz plated shortstop Mike Gagliardi.

In the bottom of the third, however, Barry shortstop Brian Lima saw two runs cross the plate during his at-bat via a balk by Mercy reliever Brad Lozano and a throwing error by catcher Matt McDermott. After falling behind 2-1, the Flyers never recovered and the Bucs piled on eight more runs.

Lima added a two-run homer in the sixth inning and finished 3-for-5 at the plate. Barry lead-off hitter left fielder Bobby Hartney went 2-5 with three runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI with center fielder Jerry Thornton going 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a double and one steal.

Gagliardi went 2-for-4 for the Flyers with a double, a run scored and an RBI. Lozano, who entered in the third inning, took the loss to go 0-2.

Buccaneer starter Luis Gazitua (1-0) got the win in his first start, pitching five innings, giving up two runs, and fanning five. Glenn Zavitz worked the final four innings with allowing a run to earn his first save.

The Bucs are back in action Saturday night against the Lewis (IL) Flyers at 6PM.
