MIAMI SHORES, Fla. – The Barry University softball team (6-4, 2-1 SSC) split a Sunshine State Conference double-header against the top-ranked Florida Southern Moccasins (5-2, 1-2 SSC) earlier today at Buccaneer Field. Barry won the first game 1-0, but later fell in the night cap 5-1.
Coming off their win over the top-ranked Moccasins to open the three-game series, the Buccaneers carried that momentum in to game two. Both teams pounded out four hits apiece in the seven inning contest, but a solo home run by Barry's
Delilah Stroup (Sr., Punta Gorda, Fla.) in the bottom of the third inning was all the Bucs needed to secure the win. Behind an excellent defensive effort by both teams,
Ramie Garcia (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz.) hurled a four-hit shutout and struck out six to improve her record to 2-1. Stacey Bronson (Jr., Brandon, Fla.) suffered the loss for Florida Southern giving up four hits one run and struck out three.
In the nightcap, the tables turned on the Buccaneers as the Moccasins pounded out eight hits in route to their 5-1 win. Florida Southern's Stephanie Huber (Sr., Vancouver, British Columbia) led off the first inning with double and later scored on Leah English's (So., Tallahassee, Fla.) RBI single to left field to give the Mocs an early 1-0 lead. Florida Southern extended their lead in the second inning scoring three runs on three hits, but Barry's
Erin Sutton drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom half of the same inning to narrow the gap to just three runs. In the seventh, Huber drove in another run on an RBI single, which carried the Mocs to the win.
Elizabeth Bennett (So., Pembroke Pines, Fla.) suffered the loss for Barry falling to 4-3 on the season. In the complete game she gave up five runs (four earned) while striking out three. Megan Brown (So., Carrolton, Ga.) picked up the win to improve to 3-1 on the year allowing just one unearned run and struck out three.
On the day, Stroup led Barry with a solo home run, while four other Buccaneers added a hit each. Huber led the Moccasins with three hits and two RBI, while Sarah Kohlbrenner (So., Dunedin, Fla.) added three hits.
The Buccaneers will be back in action on Friday, Feb. 18 for another Sunshine State Conference series against Nova Southeastern. First pitch is scheduled for 7 pm.
