Softball Solves Tars

WINTER PARK, Fla.--The #1-ranked Barry Buccaneers solved the puzzle of the Rollins College Tars by sweeping a doubleheader in Winter Park, Fla., 5-2 and 5-3 with both games going 10 innings.

The Bucs (49-8, 26-2 SSC) set a school record with their 49th win in the second game, breaking the mark of 48-9 set in 1989.

Sarah White provided the offense in both games, hitting game-winning homers in the 10th inning each time.

Geralyn Elam (30-4) picked up both wins. In the opener, she went the distance, striking out 14. She scattered eight hits, but was touched for a homer by the Tars' Priscilla Graham. She tossed 4.2 innings in relief in game two, striking out seven more. The Tars scored one run on the tie-breaker in the bottom of the 10th, but the run was not charged to Elam.

After Graham put the Tars (34-16, 15-11 SSC) up 2-0, Amanda Moore drew the Bucs even with a two-run shot of her own to set up White's heroics as she connected for a three-run homer in the 10th.

In game two, the Bucs jumped on top 2-0 scoring twice in the second inning on a pair of Tar errors. But Rollins sluggers Lindsey Manz and Tiffanie Toner each hit solo homers off Barry starter Erin Cormier to tie the game.

In the 10th inning, White smashed a two-run homer and Krista Latessa knocked in Kristina Socarras with a base hit to put Barry up 5-2. The Tars got the tie-breaker run in the bottom of the inning, but Elam struckout Kendra Dewey and Randi Weiss with the tying runs on base to end the threat.

The Bucs close out the regular season at 6:00 pm on Wednesday against the Nova Southeastern Knights at Buccaneer Field, but have already clinched the Sunshine State Conference automatic bid to the NCAA Division II South Regional May 8-11 at a campus site to be determined.
