Softball Splits SSC Doubleheader With Knights

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The No. 1 Barry University softball team split a Sunshine State Conference doubleheader with the Lynn Fighting Knights (17-12 overall, 4-2 SSC) falling in the first game 1-0 then won then nightcap 5-1 at the McCusker Sports Complex.

Both teams tallied four hits apiece, but the Fighting Knights took advantage of a Buccaneer error in the bottom of the fifth and scored the only run of the game. Lynn's third baseman Erin McNerney singled to left field with one out and designated player Allison Dougherty followed with a sacrifice bunt moving McNerney to second base. Lisa Lofton, who reached base on a miscue by the left fielder, allowed McNerney to score the winning run.

Barry pitcher Geralyn Elam (17-3) took the loss. She pitched 6.0 solid innings and surrendered one unearned run on four hits, while walking one and striking out six. Erika Youngblood (6-4) picked up the win in game one for the Fighting Knights with a solid performance hurling all 7.0 innings allowed no runs on four hits, while walking two and striking out five.

In the nightcap, the Buccaneers tapped out 11 total hits in the win while scoring one run in the first inning, added two in the third and two more in the seventh to take the split on the Knights home field. Senior centerfielder Sarah White had a monster performance going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the third inning and added two single, one run scored, and finished the day with four RBI. KD Smith, Kim Fujimoto, and Kristina Socarras each added two hits apiece.

Erin Cormier (10-1) earned the win pitching 4.2 innings and surrendering one run on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Elam picked up her first save of the season shutting down the Knights in 2.1 innings of work. McNerney (6-3) took the loss. She pitched all 7.0 innings, surrendering five runs, all earned on 11 hits while walking one and striking out four.

The Buccaneers improved to 27-6 overall and 5-1 in the SSC and will return to action on Saturday, Mar. 22 traveling to Tampa at 4 pm for SSC play.
