Softball Notches Two More Wins In Southern Colorado Tourney

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Barry University softball continued their 2003 statement picking up another pair of wins over the Eastern New Mexico Zias 8-7 and the Regis Rangers 5-1 earlier today at the Southern Colorado tournament in Las Vegas.

In the first game, the ENMU Zias (3-4) led off with three back-to-back doubles to take an early 2-0 lead. However, the Bucs responded in the bottom half of the inning with three runs taking a 3-2 lead after one. The Zias scored three unanswered runs in the second to regain the lead 5-3, but Kristina Socarras answered the call for the Bucs tying the game at five apiece with an RBI single up the middle in the third. The Bucs added three more in the fourth to take a comfortable 8-5 lead, but Bobby Richardson notched a two-run homer in the top half of the seventh to keep the scrappy Zia hopes alive. However, relief pitcher Geralyn Elam struck out the following three batters to secure the 8-7 win for the Bucs.

Erin Cormier got the starting nod, but gave up five runs (four earned) on five hits in two innings. In relief, Elam (2-0) struck out 10 batters in the final five innings to earn the win. Katina Arocha (0-1) took the loss for the Zias giving up eight runs (four earned) and walked five in 3.2 innings.

After a slight delay in field lighting problems, the Bucs notched their fourth win of the season topping the Regis Rangers (2-2) 5-1 in the nightcap. Barry's Sarah White sparked a three-run second inning with a lead off double, but three costly Ranger errors made the difference. Regis designated hitter Stacia Buda notched the Rangers' only run of the game with an RBI double in the fourth, but the Bucs tacked on two more runs in the fifth to secure the 5-1 victory.

Elam (3-0) earned the start and the win allowing four hits and one run while striking out nine. She finished with 19 strikeouts on the day in 12 innings. Christina Wade (0-1) took the loss for the Rangers giving up five runs (three earned) on eight Buccaneer hits.

White finished 3 of 4 with a double, three walks, a stolen base and an RBI to lead the Buccaneer winning efforts, while KD Smith finished 3 of 8 with a double and a stolen base.

The Buccaneer improved to 4-0 on the season and will return to action for a final game at the Southern Colorado tournament facing off with NAIA national power Biola at 10 am.
