LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- The Barry University softball team completed a five-game sweep with a 4-0 win over the Biola earlier today at the Las Vegas Classic hosted by Southern Colorado. The Buccaneers also secured wins over Mesa State 4-0, defending national champs St. Mary's 9-1, Eastern New Mexico 8-7 and Regis 5-1 to start their 2003 campaign 5-0.
KD Smith started today's game off with a bang notching a leadoff home run in the top of the first to give the Buccaneers (5-0) a 1-0 lead. In the second, the Bucs extended their lead by one on a sacrifice fly by Smith. Leading 2-0 heading into the fifth inning, freshman
Kim Fujimoto notched her second homer of the season to lift the Bucs 4-0 over Biola.
Geralyn Elam (4-0) gave up only six hits and struck out five to earn the win. Relief pitcher
Erin Cormier hurled the final three innings and gave up one hit and struck out one to pick up the save for the Bucs. Jennifer Benavidez (1-1) took the loss for Biola (1-3) pitching 4.1 innings giving up four runs on eight Buccaneer hits.
Fujimoto went 2 of 4 with a homer and two RBI to lead the Buccaneer winning efforts, while
Sarah White followed with two doubles. Smith finished the day going 2 of 3 at the plate with a homer and two RBI and
Heather Hodges also finished 2 of 4.
White finished the tournament going 8 of 12 at the plate with a .615 batting average in five starts. She also registered a 1.000 slugging percentage with five doubles, five walks and two stolen bases and was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.
At 5-0, the Buccaneers have a 10-day layoff before returning to the friendly confines of Buccaneer field on Feb. 18 hosting cross-town rival St. Thomas at 6 pm.
