MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team won a pair of games at the Buccaneer Classic earlier today defeating UNC-Pembroke 3-2 and followed with 2-1 9-inning win over region nemesis Saint Leo in the nightcap.
In the opening game,
KD Smith gave the Bucs an early 1-0 lead with a leadoff home run in the first. In the third, Smith drove in the Bucs second run with an RBI double and later scored on a
Kim Fujimoto sacrifice fly to give the Bucs a 3-0 advantage. The Braves (4-3) tried to mount a comeback in the seventh scoring two runs, but the Buc defense tightened to eliminate any threat and held on for the 3-2 win.
Erin Cormier (4-1) gave up two runs (one earned) and struck out seven to earn the win for the Bucs. Nicole McCorkle (2-1) took the loss for the Braves and gave up three runs on six hits and struck out six.
In the nightcap, the Buccaneers (14-2) took on the Saint Leo Lions (7-5) in a pitching dual. After going into extra innings, Katie Kilfolie finally gave the Lions a 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth with an RBI single. However, with two outs and bases loaded in the bottom half of the inning, Kat McNamara hit the game-winning two RBI single to lift the Bucs past the Lions 2-1.
Geralyn Elam (10-0) hurled a near perfect game giving up only two hits, struck out eight, and walked one to earn the win. Katie Heintz (4-3) suffered the loss for the Lions, but struck out 11 in 8.2 innings and walked nine.
The Buccaneers return to action in day two of the Buccaneer Classic at 2 pm facing Concordia followed with the nightcap versus Armstrong Atlantic at 4 pm.
