VALDOSTA, Ga. -- The Barry University softball team suffered their first loss of the season to the West Georgia Braves 2-1 earlier today in their first game at the South Region Crossover hosted by Valdosta State. However, the Bucs showed true championship character rebounding with a 3-0 victory over the highly touted Argonaunts in the nightcap.
In the tournament opener, neither team was able to score in the schedule seven innings sending the game into a regulation tiebreaker. The Bucs struck first in the eighth when
Carrie Roberts scored on a
Heather Hodges sacrifice fly to right giving the Bucs a 1-0 advantage. However, the Braves (1-2) were able to even the score at one apiece in the bottom half of the inning. The Braves held the Bucs scoreless in the top of the ninth and were able to take the win in the bottom half 2-1 scoring on a pitcher balk.
Delilah Stroup led the Bucs with a two for four performance with a double and a single.
Erin Cormier (2-1) took the loss for the Bucs hurling 8.1 innings giving up four hits and two unearned runs while striking out nine. Jennifer Edwards (1-0) earned the win for the Braves giving up five Buc hits and struck out three.
Showing the true nature of a championship caliber team, the Bucs bounced back with a 3-0 win over West Florida (4-2). Stroup got the Bucs on the board first in the fourth on a sacrifice fly to left to score
Kim Fujimoto to give the Bucs a 1-0 advantage. Fujimoto scored again in the fifth to extend the Buccaneer lead to 2-0. However, freshman
Amanda Moore secured the win with a solo homer in the top of the seventh, her first of the season, the allow the Bucs to claim the victory.
Sarah White led the Bucs in the nightcap going two-for-four.
Geralyn Elam (6-0) earned the win pitching a complete game giving up only three hits and striking out six.
The Bucs improve to 8-1 on the year and will resume action in day two of the South Region Crossover on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 10 am with North Alabama and will follow with games against Alabama-Huntsville at 2 pm and Valdosta State at 4 pm.
