Softball Sweeps Bobcats In Home Opener

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team swept the St. Thomas Bobcats on Tuesday night, winning 5-0 in the opener and 10-1 in the nightcap, keeping their 2003 record untarnished.

The Buccaneers (7-0) scored runs in the final four innings on five St. Thomas errors to shutout the Bobcats 5-0 in their home opener. Geralyn Elam (5-0) notched the win for the Bucs hurling seven innings, striking out nine and allowed three hits.

In the nightcap, the Buccaneers scored six unanswered runs in the third, then tacked on another three runs in the bottom of the fourth to lead 10-0 heading into the fifth. The Bobcats (2-6) managed one run in the fifth, but the Bucs slammed the door for a 10-1 win. Erin Cormier (2-0) earned the victory allowing only two hits and struck out five.

Jessica Millar (1-4) took both losses for the Bobcats giving up 14 runs on 15 Buccaneer hits.

Kim Fujimoto led the Buccaneer winning efforts going 3 for 5 with a two-run homer and four RBI.

The Bucs return to action at the South Region Crossover in Valdosta, Ga. Feb 21-23.
