Box Score MIAMI SHORES – The #2-seeded Barry University men's soccer team opened up the 2003 Sunshine State Conference Soccer Tournament with a 4-2 victory over the #7-seeded Florida Tech Panthers this afternoon at Buccaneer Field.
The Buccaneer offense struck first when
Avi Scabini blasted a shot from 10-yards out just out of the reach of Florida Tech keeper Ashley Foster at the 22:05 mark for his eighth goal of the season. The Bucs then added their second goal just minutes later when
Ricardo Raposo found the back of the net for the tenth time in 2003 after being fed up the middle by
Jonathan Leite to give the Bucs the early 2-0 lead.
Florida Tech's James Phillips then brought the Panthers to within 2-1 beating Bucs keeper
Chris Rich at the 37:23 mark, however, the momentum quickly shifted back to the Bucs side of the field when
Mike Lupton, with just 1:00 minute to play in the half took a pass from Raposo and then pulled Foster off the line before driving the ball into an empty net for his team leading fifteenth goal of the season.
The second half opened up to heavy rain and mucky conditions, however, it did not seem to affect either team. After playing to a draw for the first twenty-eight minutes the Panthers struck first on a goal by Shaun Guske to bring the game to 3-2. But, the Bucs determined to move on, then added an insurance goal with less than 1:00 minute to play when
Mahlon Sullivan drove home a cross from
Abilio Yamane to finish off the scoring and give the Bucs the 4-2 victory.
Rich picked up the victory in goal for the Bucs making three saves and Foster picked up the loss for Florida Tech despite stopping eight shots.
The Bucs now move on to play the winner of the Florida Southern vs. Rollins game on Friday at Lynn University. Times have yet to be announced.
