Box Score FLORENCE, Ala. -- The Barry University women's soccer team tamed the North Alabama Lions 5-1 earlier today at the North Florence Soccer Complex.
The Buccaneers scored early and often getting on the board first at the 21:37 mark when
Jena Cernuto crashed the right side receiving a pass from
Emelie Karlsson and
Tiina Saario for a 1-0 lead. Eight minutes later
Ulla Matikainen connected with Karlsson on a throw-in giving the Bucs to a 2-0 lead.
With 4:03 remaining in the first half, Karlsson and Saario combined again for the assist connecting this time with
Mairead McLaughlin at the top of the 18-yard box for the score. The Bucs capped off an impressive first half with
Amy Tewis robbing a Lion defender eluding her way from the right midfield for the score leading to the 4-0 halftime score.
In the second half, North Alabama's Sarah Spidel fired a rocket from the left side of the field at the 52:54 mark to narrow the gap to three. However, Karlsson added her second goal of the day with 20 minutes remaining in regulation to give the Bucs the 5-1 victory.
Karlsson finished the game with two goals and two assists, while Saario also added two assists. Goalkeeper
Johanna Fischer posted three saves and allowed one goal improving her record to 9-4-2 on the year. As a team, the Bucs posted 33 total shots to the Lions' six.
The Buccaneers will return to action on Tuesday, Oct. 28 in Boca Raton taking on conference rival Lynn University at 1 pm.
