Women's Soccer Battles to Draw With #1 Panthers

KENDALL, Fla. – The Barry University women's soccer team went toe-to-toe with the reigning 2026 Division II National Champions in Florida Tech in a Sunshine State Conference outing that resulted in a draw.

Inside the Matchup
Final: Florida Tech 0, Barry 0
Records: FIT (9-0-4, 3-0-3 SSC), Barry (6-2-4, 0-2-4 SSC)
All-Time Series: FIT leads series: 11-13-7

Summary

  • The first period of action belonged to the Panthers as they controlled the vast majority of the action as they managed to fire off seven shots and three corner kicks while the Bucs were unable to create anything on the offensive side of the field for themselves. One out of the seven shots taken only had one that needed to be saved by Marlen Hernandez.
  • Things picked up in the second half on both sides starting with the Bucs as two shots taken by Lykke Johnsen-Mørken and Rieanna Murray that were unable to find a target on goal. FIT on the other hand had quite the golden opportunity to turn things into their favor at the 82:36 minute mark. Nina Santiago for the Panthers was bestowed a free kick that resulted in a high arching shot delivered to the top left of the goal that Hernandez jumped and punched out of air denying any chance of it going into the back of the goal. From there on Hernandez only had to worry about stopping one more shot that would solidify the teams tie over the number one ranked team in the country in FIT

Noteworthy

  • The Panthers out-shot the Bucs, 16-2.
  • Both goalkeepers in Hernandez and Mette Brandes earned a shutout. Hearnandez had to work for hers as she gathered six while Brandes had a quieter night on the pitch collecting zero saves. This game marks the ninth shutout of the year for Hernandez.
  • After going the entire first half without earning corner kicks, the Bucs managed to receive two of them in the second half but FIT still had the edge over them with four overall.

On the Horizon

The Bucs travel on the road to Winter Park, Florida for an SSC match up against Rollins on Saturday, October 10th at 7:00 pm from Cahall-Sandspur Field.
