Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--The Barry Buccaneers glided past the Thomas University Nighthawks 5-3 on Sunday at Buccaneer Field.
Avi Scabini and
Carlos Pelaez each had a goal and an assist. The duo hooked up on what was the winning goal with just 1:49 left in the game. Pelaez pushed the ball up the right wing and Scabini slipped a shot past Thomas keeper Jonathan Mobley into the net.
After a scoreless first half,
Ricardo Raposo broke the ice at the 46:46 mark.
Emilio Martinez sent a long pass up the right sideline and Raposo collected it and scored past Mobley.
Mike Lupton put the Bucs up 2-0 in the 63rd minute. Mobley mishandled a ball above the 18-yard box and Lupton snaked in to steal it and scored into the empty net.
The Nighthawks trimmed the lead to 2-1 10 minutes later when Cormac McArdie took a pass from Matts Solberg, which left Barry keeeper Andrey Bustamante prone, and scored into the empty net.
The Bucs got that goal back in the 79th minute.
Mahlon Sullivan collected the ball in the back and passed it up to Scabini who fed
Fitzgerald Clarke for the goal.
The Nighthawks scrabbled back about a minute later. Anthony Bingham's shot was deflected in the box and Jonathan Carrol was there to touch in the rebound.
After Scabini's goal, Barry added an important insurance goal with just 0:32 seconds left.
Gustavo Areias pushed the ball up to Pelaez on the right wing and Pelaez shot dribbled past Mobley and into the net.
The Nighthawks (10-5-3) tallied one final goal, with just one second on the clock, when McArdie converted a penalty kick after a Bustamante foul.
Barry (11-3-3) travels to Rollins on Wednesday, Oct. 29 in a huge Sunshine State Conference match with regional implications. The winner of that game will likely advance into the NCAA Tournament and the loser could be out.
