Box Score MIAMI SHORES, Fla.--The Barry University men's soccer team tumbled the Lynn University Fighting Knights from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 3-2 overtime win at Buccaneer Field Tuesday night.

The Buccaneers (10-1-1, 4-0-0 SSC) exacted a measure of revenge for last season's 1-0 overtime loss to the Knights (11-1-0, 3-1-0 SSC) in Boca Raton.

"I think we learned what we didn't know last season," Barry coach Steve McCrath said. "That we need to win certain games at certain times. Once these guys settled in, I felt we controlled the game."

Alen Marcina was the difference with a nifty rebound goal just 3:18 into the first overtime period. Mike Lupton played the ball into the box where Lynn keeper Matt Cascoigne batted it down but could not control it. Marcina squirmed through defenders to get a foot on the ball and found the back of the net.

"Every game is a must-win game," Marcina said. "We didn't look at this as any more important than any other. We go out expecting to win every time out."

"We are very young in goal," Lynn coach Shawn Pendleton said. "and we made an unfortunate and inexperienced mistake."

The Bucs jumped out to an early lead as Greg Jehs hooked up with Emilio Martinez with 40:42 gone. Martinez played the ball into the box from a free kick and found Jehs' head. A quick flip sent the ball past Cascoigne for a 1-0 lead which stood to the half.

The Bucs dominated play in the first half, holding a 6-0 lead in shots and 3-0 in corners.

"We basically have so many injuries, we just threw out the healthy guys," Jehs said. "It was key for those guys to step up and they did."

The Knights came out determined and quickly established control. They erased the Bucs' lead in shots, but it was Barry who got on the board again. In an almost identical play, Jehs again scored on a header from a corner kick by Avi Scabini.

But the Bucs could not hold on to their lead. Mark Melling pulled the Knights to within one with a splendid goal at the 75:55 mark. Barry defender Jericho Hartley failed to clear the ball and Melling picked it off inside the penalty box and slotted a goal past Barry's Ron Goguen.

The Knights tied the game with nine minutes left. Barry's Erick Aristizabal was whistled for a hand ball foul in the penalty box and Lynn's Garthfield Whyte converted the kick to send the game to overtime and set up Marcina's heroics.

"The boys showed great character and spirit coming back," said Pendleton. "We will obviously regroup and finish the season strong."

Goguen had five saves for the Bucs, while Gascoigne had four for the Knights.
