Barry Women's Basketball Maintains Lead in SSC

The Barry women's basketball team (15-3/5-1 SSC) maintained its one-game lead in the Sunshine State Conference race despite an upset loss to St. Leo last Wednesday night. The Bucs also powered to a 74-60 victory over Eckerd College in St. Petersburg Saturday afternoon.

Angie Williams, Barry's All-American candidate, poured in 24 points and 11 rebounds to lead the victory over Eckerd. Williams now is second in the SSC in scoring (21.0 ppg) and first in rebounding (11.0). Williams had her 10th double/double of the year against Eckerd. She is also in the top 10 nationally in NCAA II in scoring and rebounding. She leads the SSC in field goal percentage at 63.2%. Sunshine State Conference Web Page

Junior center Kelly Mahan (West Palm Beach) has been a major contributor in recent games. She scored 16 against Eckerd and has been a solid rebounder inside. She is now averaging 10.6 ppg and 4.9 rebounds. Senior guard Kim Tuel (Ft. Lauderdale) provides stability at the point guard slot, as she also tops the Sunshine State Conference in assists at 5.0 per game.

Beginning the second half of SSC play, Barry will host Lynn Wednesday night at 5:30 p.m. at the HSC, and then the University of Tampa Saturday night, also at 5:30 p.m The Bucs have a big chance to open a bigger lead in the SSC as they will now play three of their next four games at home.

The Buccaneers received votes for the NCAA II Top 20 for the second consecutive week, and moved to a tie for 5th in the South Region.
