Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas--The Barry University men's soccer team crowned the Hilltoppers of St. Edwards University 4-2 at the Incarnate Word Invitational at the McDermott Center Saturday afternoon.
Alen Marcina scored twice for the Bucs, while
Ben Cooper and
Kevin Lamy each added single goals.
Thiago Vasconcelos and
Greg Jehs each had two assists.
Marcina got the Bucs on the scoreboard quickly, netting the game's first goal at the 8:23 mark with an assist from Vasconcelos.
The Hilltoppers fired right back, however, knotting the game at 1-1 when Mace Bell took a feed from Shane Clark at the 23:12 mark.
Marcina provided the answer less than two minutes later on a pass from Jehs and Cooper added an insurance goal at the 27:50 mark from Vasconcelos to give Barry a 3-1 lead at the half.
In the second period,
Kevin Lamy broke through at the 55:40 mark off a cross from Jehs to give the Bucs a 4-1 lead.
St. Edwards scored a late goal on a penalty kick by Brian Snowden to trim to lead to 4-2 at the 73:04 mark, but that's as close as they would get.
Ron Goguen worked the first 59:36 in goal for Barry, making one save, to earn the win. Willie Leiste mopped up the last 30:24 and allowed the penalty kick to Snowden. Sean Campbell made four saves for the Hilltoppers.
Barry improves to 10-1-3, while St. Edwards falls to 3-13-1. The Buccaneers return home on Oct. 27 to play a Sunshine State Conference match against Eckerd.
