Box Score PALM BEACH, Fla.—The Barry women's soccer team overcame a scrappy bunch from Northwood University 3-0 at Seminole Field Sunday afternoon.
Ashley Snell, playing in front of her hometown crowd, led the Bucs with a goal and an assist.
Tammie Thornton and
Amy Tewis each added a goal, while Pam McDonald and Charlene Hillebrand each had an assist.
The Seahawks bunched 10 players inside the 18-yard box and dared the Buccaneers to shoot from outside. Though the strategy mostly worked as the Bucs fired a number of shots over the goal, all three goals came from within 10 yards.
Thornton got the Bucs on the scoreboard at the 52:00 minute mark. Pam McDonald served a free kick into the box and Thornton's header beat Northwood keeper Jennifer Wilson.
Snell added her goal on a penalty kick just five minutes later. Kirsten Buteau was tackled in the penalty area by Northwood's Tara Witte and Snell converted the kick.
Snell combined with Hillebrand at the 82:29 mark to assist Tewis on her goal. Hillebrand passed the ball up the left flank to Snell who crossed the ball over to Tewis at the top of the six-yard box.
Barry keepers
Johanna Fischer and
Amy Gibson combined for the shutout, though neither faced a shot as the Seahawks disdained any attempt at offense and only pushed the ball over the midfield stripe three times in the first half and none in the second.
Barry improves to 11-3-0, while Northwood falls to 2-10-1. The Buccaneers host Florida Southern in a Sunshine State Conference match on Sunday, Oct. 21. The game will be the final home regular season match for the Buccaneers' three seniors: Snell,
Erika O'Brien and
Stephanie O'Brien.
