Founded in 1975, the Sunshine State Conference has developed from a basketball organization into the NCAA Division II "Conference of National Champions." Since its inception, the Conference has grown steadily in sports played, membership, and national prominence.
Sunshine State Conference teams have won NCAA Division II national championships in baseball, men's basketball, men's and women's golf, women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, volleyball and men's and women's tennis.
The SSC sponsors championships in 18 sports for men and women: baseball, men's and women's basketball, men's and women's cross country, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, women's rowing, men's and women's soccer, softball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's tennis and volleyball.
Barry University joined the SSC in June of 1988. Other SSC members - all in Florida - are Eckerd College (St. Petersburg), Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (Daytona Beach), Florida Tech (Melbourne), Florida Southern College (Lakeland), Lynn University (Boca Raton), Nova Southeastern University (Davie), Palm Beach Atlantic (West Palm Beach), Rollins College (Winter Park), Saint Leo University (Saint Leo) and the University of Tampa (Tampa).
SSC member colleges and universities have won 117 national championships. Numerous All-Americans, Academic All-Americans and professional athletes have attended SSC institutions. The SSC is respected for its academic foresight, setting standards which were later adopted by the NCAA. The SSC has led all 22 Division II conferences in the NCAA Academic Success Rate every year it has been measured. Each year, over 1,500 student-athletes are named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll with GPAs over 3.20 on a 4.00 scale.
