ORLANDO - Barry sophomore keeper Marlen Hernandez was named the Sunshine State Conference women's soccer defensive player of the week for Aug. 31-Sept. 6. It is her first award of the season and the third of her career.

Hernandez posted three straight shutouts on the week, leading Barry over Southern Wesleyan (2-0), Spartanburg Methodist (2-0), and Middle Georgia State (5-0).  

She started the week with a season-high nine-save performance against Southern Wesleyan. The nine save are also the most for anyone in the conference this year. Against Spartanburg Methodist and Middle Georgia, she only face one shot on goal in each game.

With the shutouts, she runs her scoreless streak to 450 minutes this season, and 472 dating back to last year. She leads the SSC in goals-against average and save percentage.

The Bucs (5-0-0) face the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Friday, Sept. 11 in their next outing.
