Saturday Sweep for #6 Women's Volleyball Over Bentley

The Bucs secure their first win of 2026 with a sweep of Falcons

WALTHAM, Ma. -- The long opening weekend comes to an end with the sixth-ranked Barry women's volleyball team picking up their first sweep of the 2026 season. The Bucs defeated host 22-ranked Bentley, 3-0, in their final match at the Sandy Hoffman Memorial Tournament, picking up their first win.

SUMMARY:

  • Set One – McKayla Theleus set the tone early with a kill to open the match. Both team traded the lead until the Bucs were able to gain some spread capitalizing on three Falcon errors. Back-to-back kills from Varvara Osychenko and then a third followed from Theleus forced Bentley to call a timeout as they trailed by four. Sofya Toropova did not let up putting down a kill immediate after. Barry cruised the rest of the way to take the set. Osychenko led the way with seven kills and hitting .312. Theleus added help on the defense with six digs. | Barry 25, Bentley 16
  • Set Two – In another close start to the set, the Bucs were able to string together an 8-1 run that gave them more than enough cushion. Osychenko and Theleus continued their offensive prowess with a combined 13 kills. The team hit .517 with just three errors on 18 kills. | Barry 25, Bentley 16
  • Set Three – Bentley jumped out first and held the lead as they tried to work their way back into the match. However, the Bucs stormed back knotted things up at 12-all, while then flipping it to a two-point advantage as freshman Maye McConnell solidified the run with a service ace. After an 18-18 tie, Osychenko, Toropova, and Theleus teamed up for three straight kills to swing full momentum onto the Bucs side. NOTEWORTHY:

  • The offense had their greatest outing yet hitting .347 with 46 kills.
  • Osychenko led the way for the second straight day with a match-high 18 kills and recorded another double-double with 10 digs.
  • Theleus followed with 14 kills, hitting .429, three service aces, and recording a double-double of her own with a career-high 12 digs.
  • Thalia Iglesias led the setter role with 35 assists, three kills, and seven digs.
  • Barry led in all statistical categories, ending even in blocks at four each.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will head home and host the Buccaneer Invitational, with a double header matchup on Friday, September 4. First match is against Converse at 12:15 p.m. and the night cap against #5 St. Cloud State at 7:00 p.m.
