Women’s Tennis Stays Strong with Win Over Saint Leo

SAINT LEO, Fla. --  The Number one-ranked Barry University women's tennis team took on the No.47 Saint Leo women's tennis team and took home the victory in a 7-0 sweep. This win marks the Bucs eighth straight win and 10th sweep of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Barry began the match by sweeping all three doubles flights to grab an early 1-0 lead and set the tone for the match.
  • Carrying that momentum into singles, Michalitsch made a statement with a dominant 6-2, 6-2 win over Johnson. 
  • Sperb followed right behind, cruising past Bettinelli 6-3, 6-1 to push the Bucs within striking distance of victory. 
  • Nikolova then sealed the match for Barry in commanding fashion, defeating Novak 6-4, 6-0 to clinch the win. 
  • Brun was the next Bucs to finish, defeating Fernandini 6-4, 6-1 to make the score 5-0 Barry. 
  • Lutringer kept the pressure on, battling through a tight second set to defeat Keller 6-2, 7-5 and avoid a tiebreak.
  • In the final match of the day, Dema capped off the sweep with a resilient three-set performance. After taking the first set 6-2 and dropping the second 3-6, she bounced back dominantly to claim the decider 6-1, 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Dema and Michalitsch have won all eight of their last singles matches and are undefeated this season. 
  • Brun is on a five-match win streak of her own, winning six of her last seven matches. 
  • Sperb is now 4-0 in the season in singles. 
  • In Doubles, Crespo and Lutringer are now on an eight-match win streak, winning nine of their last 10 matches. 
  • Also in doubles, the duo of Nikolova and Dema continues their dominant run and is now 10-0 for the season. 

ON THE HORIZON

The Bucs will play again tomorrow, Mar. 29th, in their fifth conference match of the season against No. 23 Eckerd College at the Fred Bullard Courts in St. Petersburg, Fla.
