Men's Volleyball Splits Weekend Series With Emmanuel

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. - The Barry Men's Volleyball team split the weekend series against Emmanuel from the Health and Sports Center Gym. The Lions took game one on Friday night in four sets, but the Bucs bounced back and dominated on Saturday in a sweep.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MATCH ONE):

  • Set One - William Phinizy got the start and executed the first kill of the night. Both teams traded points back and forth until Emmanuel was able to get some separation at 15-9. They Lions took the initial match lead. Barry struggled with just nine kills and hitting .033, while having five service errors and eight attacking errors. | Emmanuel 25, Barry 19
  • Set Two - It was a very similar second set, the Lions narrowly held the edge but kept it al the way through. Emmanuel had an 80-percent side out going 17-21. It was the highest offensive set for Barry in the match at 10 kills and .147 hitting average. | Emmanuel 25, Barry 20
  • Set Three - Emmanuel jumped on it early with a 3-0 rally. Barry finally flipped the board at 10-9 with a momentum shifting kill by freshman, Said Bennaji. The Bucs rode that lead to the finish to make it a 2-1 match. It was another 10-kill set, four service aces aided while holding Emmanuel to a .000 hit percentage. | Barry 25, Emmauel 22
  • Set Four - The Lions cruised to victory in the fourth and final set. Their offense hit .345 with 13 kills and just three errors. Barry hit .069 with six kills. | Emmanuel 25, Barry 13

NOTEWORTHY (MATCH ONE):

  • Jacob Strnisa had 11 kills, two service aces, nine digs, and four block assists.
  • Both teams had six blocks each.
  • Service and offense struggled with a combined 43 errors.
  • Bennaji hit a career-high 14 assists.

HOW IT HAPPENED (MATCH TWO):

  • Set One – It was a completely different vibe in the gym for the Buccaneers in the rematch of the Lions. The Bucs opened on a huge triple block by Maddox Gifford, William Phinizy, and Joao Piazza Baumgartem. Then quickly followed with another by Gifford and Jacob Strnisa. This set the tone early and Barry cruised to a first set victory at 25-10. The offense had 12 kills, not making a single attacking error for a .480 hit percentage. The defense had 5.5 blocks forcing a -.161 hitting percentage. | Barry 25, Emmanuel 10
  • Set Two – Emmanuel got the first point in the second set trying to get their grove back. A 6-0 run after a 1-2 trail made it 7-2 in favor of the Bucs. It was another smooth sailing set for Barry. This time the offense had 14 kills and four service aces while hitting .355. The Lions had just four kills and hit .000. | Barry 25, Emmanuel 14
  • Set Three – The third set was amore of a back-and-forth battle. After a 5-5 tie, Barry ran off four straight points that strengthen the lead. Emmanuel tried to rally towards the end but the match ended the same way it started off a block by Gifford and Strnisa. It was a match high 15 kills in the set with a .324 attacking percentage. Barry put away 15 of the 20 sideout chances.

NOTEWORTHY (MATCH TWO):

  • Zachary Jabr set a new career-high with 15 kills on the night. He was nearly flawless with just two hitting errors for a .419 attack percentage.
  • Jacob Strnisa also had 15 kills in the match with a .583 hitting percentage and just one error.
  • It sets s new program record for hitting percentage in a match with a minimum of 20 attempts.
  • William Phinizy had 13 digs, second most in a match in program history, and a new career-high.
  • Joao Piazza Baumgartem had 30 assists and 12 digs, both career highs. Just the second person in program history to have a 30-assist match.

Barry will have a three match week new week starting on the road against Webber International, Thursday, February 12.
