Women's Basketball Loses In Tampa

TAMPA, Fla. --  The Barry Buccaneers lost 79-53 to the Tampa Spartans in Sunshine State Conference women's basketball action from the Martinez Center on Saturday.

SUMMARY:

  • 1Q - Barry jumped out in front in the early going, leading 9-4 after a free throw from Akvila Babraityte with 6:36 left in the first period. BUt the Spartans resonded with a 14-3 run over the next five minutes to take the lead for good. | Tampa 20, Barry 14
  • 2Q - Up by nine, with 7:35 left in the hald, the Spartans out-scored the Bucs 16-4 heading into the break. | Tampa 43, Barry 22
  • 3Q - Tampa stormed out of the locker room with eight straight points to start the half and took a 31-point lead about a minute later on a basket by Giorgia Palmieri. After swapping baskets for most of the rest of the quarter, Tampa scored the last five points to go into the final period up 35. | Tampa 68, Barry 33
  • 4Q - Tampa extended the lead to 39 with the first four points of the final quarter, but Barry used a 14-2 run to cut the lead to 27 on a pair of free throws from Kendall Parker. The Bucs closed the game on a 6-0 run to make the final score.  | Tampa 79, Barry 53

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Izzy Brenzil again led Barry with 12 points, and six rebounds.
  • Kornelia Ignerska added 10 points and a team-high two assists.
  • Palmieri led the Spartans with 18 points.
  • Ryan Franklin and Brooklynn Butler each had 12 and Olivia Davis chipped in 10.
  • Franklin led the Spartans with 11 boards as they held a 33-25 edge on the glass and 10-6 edge in second-0chance points.
  • Tampa dominated the paint, out-scoring Barry 32-20.

ON THE HORIZON:
The Bucs return home to host the arch-rival Lynn Knights on Wednesday, Jan. 14.
