Women's Soccer Opens Season With Rout Of Gyrenes

Bengtsson gets a brace in her Buccaneer debut

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers opened the season with a 5-0 rout of the Ave Maria Gyrenes on Thursday night at Buccaneer Field.

SUMMARY:

  • 10:03 - Elsa Bengtsson broke the scoring ice for the season early in the first half. She took a throw-in from Cordelia Brown on hte left side and buried a shot to the far post against Gyrene keeper Emma Schweitzer | Barry 1, AMU 0
  • 38:19 - In the 39th minute, Katelyn Billoch got free with the ball on the left side of the 18-yard box. As she made her move into the box, AMU's Betsy Laville pulled her down from behind. Jenny Skogmo converted the penalty kick for a 2-0 lead. | Barry 2, AMU 0
  • 44:49 - Just seconds before the half, the Bucs got the ball back in the midfield. Billoch played the ball forward to Olivia Bradley who flicked it ahead to Ronya Halleen who converted the goal right before the break. | Barry 3, AMU 0
  • 46:26 - Just after the halftime, Bengtsson got on the board again. Bradley drove the ball down the right side and found Bengtsson unmarked at the top of the six-yard box. | Barry 4, AMU 0
  • 77:23 - Later in the second half, freshman Maya Ohlin got her first Barry goal with an assist from Lykke Johnsen-Mørken. | Barry 5, AMU 0

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry out-shot the Gyrenes 18-6, including 7-1 on goal.
  • Marlen Hernandez had one save in 77 minutes of work to earn her first win as a Buccaneer.
  • Caly Crisman cleaned up the last 12:37 for the Bucs, without facing a shot.
  • Schweitzer had two saves, but conceded five goals to take the loss for Ave Maria.
  • The Gyrenes, based on NAIA rules, counted the game as an exhibtion. 

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts the Clayton State Lakers on Saturday, Sept. 6 at 5:30 pm in their next outing.
