Women's Tennis Advances To National Championship Match For The Eighth Straight Year

Bucs humble the Flagler Saints 4-1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The top-seeded and ranked Barry Buccaneers swept the #8-ranked and fourth-seeded Flagler Saints 4-1 at the 2025 NCAA Division II Women's Tennis Championship to advance to the women's tennis national finals for the eighth straight year.

"We are really happy to be back in the championship match," Barry head coach Avi Kigel said. "We worked really hard the whole year, so we deserve to be here. We earned it. Can't wait for tomorrow."

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bucs quickly took the #2 doubles 6-1, but trailed at #1 before clinching the point at #3.
  • Barry led after doubles 1-0 for the 23rd time this year.
  • In singles, Barry won five of the six first sets.
  • At number five singles, #52 Alloiarova made quick work of Balsra 6-1, 6-2.
  • The Bucs made it 3-0 as #15 Viktoriia Dema defeated Nikolova 6-4, 6-2.
  • Needing just one point the clinch, Barry had match point at the third, fourth and sixth flights.
  • While #31 Angela Leweurs clinched the match at #6 by beating Jipescu 6-1, 6-3, the Saints managed to tally a point as #8 Heimen simulatenously defeated #5 Michalitsch 6-3, 6-2 at #1.
  • The other matches went unfinished.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • For Barry, it is their eighth trip in a row and the 11th time overall to advance to the NCAA final. They have eight championships, including six in a row from 2017-23, and two runner-up finishes in 30 tournament appearances.
  • The Bucs six straight titles are an NCAA Division II record and they are tied with Armstrong Atlantic's now-defunct program for the most overall at eight. 
  • Barry improved to 105-22 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, the most wins of any program in NCAA Division II history.
  • It was the 20th straight win over the Saints, since dropping the first-ever contest in 1994. Three of the last four have come in the national tournament.

ON THE HORIZON

The Bucs will take the second-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks for the championship on Sunday, May 25 at 9:00 am. It will be the third straight year that the Bucs and Sharks have faced off for the title. Barry won in 2023 and the Sharks took the title last year.
