Women's Tennis Routs Spartans To Advance To Quarterfinals

Bucs make the quarters for the eighth straight year

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The No. 1 nationally-ranked, No. 1 seeded Barry Buccaneers defeated No. 35 nationally-ranked, No. 16 seeded St. Thomas Aquinas 4-0 in round of 16 of women's tennis action at the NCAA Division II women's tennis championship at Sanlando Park on Wednesday morning.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The doubles point quickly went to the Buccaneers as they won at the top two flights.
  • Crespo quickly shutout Zhouxuan 6-0, 6-0 at #6.
  • Fifth-ranked Michalitsch dispatched Fyvie 6-1, 6-0 at the top flight.
  • The clinch came at #5 as #15 Dema beat Silins 6-3, 6-1.
  • The remaining matches remained unfinished, with Barry up a set in all three.   

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry advanced to the national quarterfinals for the eighth straight year and 28th time overall since 1996.
  • Barry has won eight NCAA Division II national championships, tied with Armstrong Atlantic for the most.
  • It was the second straight meeting with the Spartans in the first round of the nationals.
  • The win was the 103rd for the Bucs in NCAA Tournament play, most of any school (Armstrong Atlantic had 92, Lynn has 84 for the second-highest active mark).
  • The win marked the 100th dual match singles wins for the Bucs this year, as they improved to 100-17 (.854).

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs advance to the national quarterfinals against the #17 Point Loma Sea Lions, who advanced with a 4-1 win over #33 Augustana, at 9:00 am on Thursday.
