Barry Swimming Finishes SSC Championships

Incredible performances with multiple records shattered.

OCALA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers concluded their second appearance at the SSC Championship, in this event they competed against their rival schools, Nova Southeastern, The University of Tampa, Lynn University, Florida Southern, Florida Institute of Technology, and Rollins. The team placed 7th for both genders, even though the team was unable to finish in the top three, they made significant strides and improvements each day that they raced.

The Barry Buccaneers finished the SSC Championships with several standout performances from their athletes. The first event started with the women's 100 Free in which Evelin Zbiskó finished 10th with a 51.13 time, not only setting another new school record with a 3-second improvement, she would once again qualify for the Division II NCAA Championships, this time in the 100 Free. She would be joined by one of the team's aces, Diana Suprun who took 3rd place with a time of 2:16.21 in the 200 Breaststroke, not only qualifying her for the Division II NCAA Championships once more, she would set another new school record with a 4-second improvement. The Barry A-team completed their 400 Free relay, finishing in 6th with a time of 3:33.39, setting a new school record barely with a 1 second difference. No Barry swimmers competed in the 1650 Free or 200 Back finals, ending the day for the women.

The Barry Men began their events in the SSC Championship with the 1650 Free, Matthew McLean would have the day of his career, setting a new school record with his time of 16:14.26, a truly massive 20-second improvement from the previous. In the 100 Free, Milosz Mencel would join his teammates in the Division II NCAA Championships by having a 44.77 time in the event, barely missing out on a new record. Jacopo Lanzo followed closely in 13th (44.91) also earning an NCAA qualification. The 200 Back featured Roland Nagy and his upset 2nd place finish (1:44.80) earning his place in the Division II NCAA Championships. Balazs Ament delivered a standout performance in the 200 Breaststroke, finishing 2nd in the event (1:59.00), earning an NCAA qualification and obliterating the school record with a 13-second improvement. Barry closed out the championship with multiple school records broken, NCAA qualifications, and strong point contributions. From Zbiskó and Suprun's dominance in the women's events to Ament and Nagy leading the men's team, Barry had a historic finish to the conference championship meet.

    • Diana Suprun: 2:16.21 (3rd Place, 16 Points, Qualified for the Division II NCAA Championships AND Set a new school record with a four second difference.)
