Lane's Last Minute Heroics Boost Men's Basketball Over Mocs

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers defeated the Florida Southern Mocs 88-87 in Sunshine State Conference men's basketball action at the Health & Sports Center on Saturday. Barry sweeps the season series over Florida Southern.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - Adren Roberts came out aggressive, scoring the game's first four points to put the Buccaneers up early. The Mocs answered with a six-point run to go up 6-4. The Bucs didn't retake the lead for the rest of the half. However, they managed to stay within striking distance. After the Mocs built a 12-point lead, the Bucs answered with a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to five with 4:40 remaining. The Bucs would get even closer after Michael Bradley found Roberts for a layup to cut the lead to four with under two minutes remaining. After a pair of Gabe Hernandez free throws, the Bucs trailed by just two with 1:10 to play. Hernandez then drove to the rim for a layup with under 30 seconds remaining to tie the game at 46. It marked the first tie since 17:23 to play. Jimel Lane led the Bucs with 16 points and four rebounds. Hernandez scored nine, seven of which came from the free throw line. Roberts added eight points and three assists.   • 2H - Darius Lee started the second-half scoring to put the Bucs up 48-46. It marked their first lead since the first two minutes of the game. However, the Mocs answered with a 10-0 run to take a 56-48 lead and force a Barry timeout. The Bucs scored the first five points after the timeout to cut the lead to three. After the Mocs scored five consecutive to go back up eight, Lee scored five in a row to cut the deficit to three again. After back and forth play, Lane knocked down a pair of free throws to tie the game at 71 with under 10 remaining. With 7:43 to go, Sami Elkamel knocked down a free throw to put the Bucs back on top for the first time since early in the half. The two teams then traded baskets with multiple lead changes and ties occurring in the final minutes. The Mocs led 87-84 with less than 10 seconds left. Lane made a layup with under five seconds remaining to cut the deficit to one. After a quick foul by Hernandez, Florida Southern's Peyton Gerald missed both free throws, opening the door for the Bucs. Lane rushed down the court and was fouled on a three-point attempt with less than one second remaining. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Lane finished with a game-high 26 points. He was 10-11 from the free throw line. He also led the Bucs with 11 rebounds.
  • Hernandez and Lee each finished with 18 points.
  • Roberts finished with 10 points. He and Hernandez were also tied for the team lead with four assists.
  • Gerald and Jadin Booth both scored 24 points for the Mocs.
  • Alex Steen recorded a 14-point, 15-rebound double-double.
  • The Bucs shot 43.8% from three-point range while holding the Mocs to just 25.8% from beyond the arc.
  • The Bucs knocked down 85.2% of their free throws, making 23 total in the game.

ON THE HORIZON:
Barry will look to avenge a January loss when they host the Lynn Fighting Knights on Wednesday, Feb. 19.
