Bustamante Looks To Lead Women's Basketball in 2025-26

With a New Coach, New expectations, and New Culture the Bucs Prepare For the Crossover Tournament

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. — For new head coach Allison Bustamante and the Barry Univeristy women's basketball team, a new era dawns this weekend as the Bucs travel up to Boca Raton, Fla., to play in the Sunshine State/Gulf South Crossover Tournament to start the 2025-26 season.

The Buccaneers take on GSC foes Trevecca Nazarene on Friday, Nov. 14 at 1:00 pm Eastern time, and face Christian Brothers at 11:00 am Eastern on Saturday, Nov . 

Live statistics will be provided by StateBroadcast, while the video stream, which is free to view, will be hosted on the Sunshine State Conference Digital Network.

Bustamante's Bucs, who were tabbed ninth in the SSC pre-season poll, return just three letter-winners from last season. Senior post Zaaliyah Kailahi-Fulu played in 27 games, averaging 2.7 points and 2.4 rebounds, while shooting 44.4 percent from the floor. Sophomore point guard Kornelia Ignerska played in 191 games, making one start. She scored 1.6 points per game, shooting 30.8 percent from three-point range. Junior Andreonia Doe played in nine games. The team has been bolstered by transfers Kendall Parker (Guard | USC-Aiken), Jameria Robinson (Guard | Catawba) and Janina Vergara Vergil (Center | Bridgeport), as well as freshmen Izzy Brenzil (Guard | Wellend, Ontario), Akvile Babraityte (Forward | Kaunas, Lithuania), Jazz Cook (Forward | Miami, Fla.) Paloma Bioque (Guard | Cordoba, Spain), and Paola Pareja Xargayo (Guard | Sant Pol de Mar, Spain).

The Trevecca Nazarene Trojans, under new head coach Doug Novak, went 8-20 last season and were picked 11th in the Gulf South Conference. The Trojans have 10 returners the roster. They placed three players on the GSC newcomer watch list, including freshman Ellie Butler (Guard | Livingston, Tenn.), freshman Natalie Hernandez (Guard | Barelona, Spain) and junior transfer Jordan Gilles (Guard | Montevallo). Senior guard Tatum Shaw is the leading returning scorer at 10.7 points per game. Senior forward Cheyanne Trotter averaged 9.6 points and led the team with 8.5 rebounds per game.

Christian Brothers, also under a new coach in Samantha Davidson, struggled to a 1-26 record last year and were picked 12th of 12 in the highly competitive GSC. The Buccaneers placed three on the GSC newcomer watch list in sophomore Mya Bourget (Guard | Cedarville), junior Donee Frasier (Center | Lander) and freshman DeAnna Carrington (Guard | Colchester, England).
