Buccaneers Welcome 11th Class Of the Wall of Honor

Seven new members join the illustrious wall

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Barry University Athletics proudly announces the 11th Class of the Wall of Honor, one of the Buccaneers’ most cherished athletic traditions, which will be officially inducted in a ceremony on January 30, 2025.

Five student-athletes and two coaches represent the cream of the crop for Buccaneer Athletics. They totaled 14 All-America awards, seven Scholar or Academic All-America awards, six Sunshine State Conference players of the year, and one SSC freshmen of the year. The coaches amassed three national championships, two national coach of the year awards, six SSC coach of the year awards and six regional coaching awards. In addition, they mentored 11 student-athletes inducted into the Wall of Honor.

The 11th Class includes, in chronological order based on the conclusion of their Barry careers, student-athletes Jon Samford (men’s soccer), Sarah Broeseker Coleman (softball), Nancy Vergara (women’s golf), Beth Desmond (rowing) and Ahmed Triki (men’s tennis). Coaches Dave Nichols (volleyball) and Steve McCrath (men’s soccer) are inducted for meritorious service.

Jon Samford bridged the tenures of coaches Herb Dunning and Steve McCrath, helping build the Buccaneers into the powerhouse program they became. After two seasons playing and a red-shirt season, Samford led the Bucs to an outstanding season under first-year coach McCrath in 1998, leading the team in assists. In 1999, he became Barry’s first men’s soccer All-American by the NSCAA, posting his best season with five goals and six assists as the Bucs hosted the NCAA Division II championship for the first time. He ranks seventh in game’s started and is tied for 15th in career assists. He led the team to the 1999 national semifinals and was a two-time All-Sunshine State Conference pick.

Sarah Broeseker Coleman was both an outstanding player and student during her time in The Shores. The 2013 Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year and a first-team All-America selection by both Daktronics and the NFCA, she was also named a first-team Academic All-American by CoSIDA and earned NFCA Scholar All-America three times. She ranks in the top-10 in career batting records with 50 doubles (2nd), 312 total bases (2nd), 120 RBI (4th), 220 hits (5th), 9 triples (6th), and a .493 slugging percentage (10th). She led Barry to a 140-69 record during her career, including 69-26 in the SSC. She was named All-SSC three times and earned two Player of the Week awards.

Nancy Vergara became the only Buccaneer to win an individual NCAA national championship, capturing the 2013 individual medal.  She was also named the Collegiate Women's Sports Awards/Honda Division II Women's Golf Athlete of Year that season A two-time WGCA All-America in 2013 and 2014, she played 101 rounds in 40 career tournaments with a 77.31 stroke average. Her 291 score at the nationals is the school record for 72-round tournaments and her stroke average is 11th in program history. She ranks in the top-10 in program history for rounds (8th), finish percentage (75.8 – 8th) and birdies (166 – 7th). Of her 101 rounds, 86 counted in the team score (85.1).

Beth Desmond is one of the best to pull an oar for the Buccaneer rowing crew. She led Barry to Sunshine State Conference and NCAA Division II National Championships in 2015 and 2016, earning CRCA All-American in 2016. She was All-Sunshine State Conference twice during her career and also made the All-Freshman Team in 2013. As a member of the Varsity 4 in 2015, she led the crew to SSC Boat of the Year honors, the first time that a V4 won the award. Switching to the Varsity 8 in 2016, she again led the crew to Boat of the Year honors. She was voted Barry Female Athlete of the Year in 2016.

The only tennis player, male or female, in Sunshine State Conference history to earn singles and doubles All-America status all four years, Ahmed Triki is one of the most decorated athletes in the SSC ever. He is also the only player to win SSC Player of the Year three times in his career, a four-time First-Team All-SSC in both singles and doubles, the 2017 ITA Regional and National Senior Player of the Year, the 2015 ITA Regional & National Player to Watch, the 2014 ITA Regional Rookie of the Year and the SSC Freshman of the Year, and the 2016-17 Barry Male Athlete of the Year. Additionally, he was a three-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and four-time ITA Scholar All-American. He is Second in program history in singles winning percentage (55-6, .902) all at #1 and he holds the program record with 83 doubles wins and is second with .865 winning percentage, again all at #1.

Dave Nichols, who coached the women’s volleyball team for 12 years, tops the list with the most wins (276), most conference wins (131) as well as the best winning percentage both overall (.734) and in conference matches (.766). He led the Bucs to the NCAA Division II national championship match three times, including wins in 2001 and 2004. His charges accumulated 24 All-America awards, three Academic All-America awards, six Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year awards, and 41 All-SSC selections. So far, six of his former players have been inducted into the Wall of Honor, including Cindy Yuan (2002), Janina Morusiewicz (2002), Elvira Vakhidova (2004), Fernanda Ferreira (2007), Fernanda Brino (2016) and Karla Bersano (2021). Yuan was the first player to earn SSC Player of the Year three times while Ferreira was the first Buccaneer to earn AVCA All-America three times in her career.

Steve McCrath, the scion of men’s soccer coaching legend Cliff McCrath with whom he won national championships as both a player and assistant coach at Seattle Pacific, was at the helm for 23 of the Buccaneers’ 41 seasons, amassing a 241-134-40 record, five Sunshine State Conference championships and the 2018 NCAA Division II national championship. He coached the first 27 of the Bucs’ 30 All-Americans as well as 11 of the 12 Scholar and Academic All-Americans. A total of five of his former players have been inducted into the Wall of Honor, including Alen Marcina (2007), Mark Anderson (2021) Andy Hylton (2021), Johnny Rodrigues (2024) and Jon Samford (2025). Mark Anderson pulled a rare double award in 2010, becoming the only Buccaneer in history to be named Player of the Year (Daktronics) and Academic All-American of the Year (CoSIDA).
