Women's Tennis Tames Mustangs 4-0 To Advance To Finals

Barry to play for 7th straight championship

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. -- The top-seeded and ranked Barry Buccaneers swept the #8-ranked and fifth-seeded Midwestern State Mustangs 4-0 at the 2024 NCAA Division II Spring Sports Festival to advance to the women's tennis national finals for the seventh straight year.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Bucs quickly took the #2 doubles 6-1, but had to work at #1 after leading 4-1 to win 6-4.
  • Barry led after doubles 1-0 for the 20th time this year.
  • In singles, Barry won five of the six first sets.
  • Angela Leweurs and Dinara Alloirova finished their matches within moments of each other, with Leweurs winning at No. 5 and Alloiarova at No. 4.
  • Viktoriia Dema clinched the match 6-4, 6-1 at No. 2, sending the Buccaneers back to the finals.
  • The other matches went unfinished.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • For Barry, it is their seventh in a row and the 10th time overall to advance to the NCAA final. They have eight championships, including the last six in a row, and two runner-up finishes in 29 tournament appearances.
  • The Bucs six straight titles are an NCAA Division II record and they are tied with Armstrong Atlantic's now-defunct program for the most overall at eight. 
  • Barry improved to 101-21 all-time in the NCAA Tournament, the most wins of any program in NCAA Division II history.
  • It was the third straight win over the Mustangs in series history. All have come at the national tournament.  

ON THE HORIZON

The Bucs will take the second-ranked Nova Southeastern Sharks for the championship on Friday, May 24 at 1:00 pm. It will be the second straight year that the Bucs and Sharks have faced off for the title.
