Morrisey's Gem Propels Baseball To Opening Win Over Tritons

Bucs' starter faced one over the minimum in 8 innings

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- Joe Morrisey tossed a gem to win his second game, as the Barry Buccaneers bested the Eckerd Tritons 4-1 in Sunshine State Conference baseball action at Feinbloom Field on Friday night.

SUMMARY:

  • B3 - Jimmy Bruno launched his first homoer of the year, a solo shot to left, to give Barry the early lead. | Barry 1, Eckerd 0
  • B4 - Barry put two on the board in the fourth. Evan Wickeri led off with a single and stole second, despite a pick-off attempt by the Tritons. He went to third on a single by Felix Diaz and scored on a ground ball from Kevin Noriega. Diaz later scored on an infield single by Freddy Rodriguez. | Barry 3, Eckerd 0
  • T8 - The Tritons finally got on the board in the eighth as Cam Collier hit a lead off homer to right center.  | Barry 3, Eckerd 1
  • B8 - Wickeri helped manufacture another run for the Bucs in the bottom of the inning. He singled to lead off, went to second on a ground out, third on a failed pick off by Eckerd pitcher Lane Funneman and scored on a fly out by Diaz. | Barry 4, Eckerd 1

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Morrisey (2-2) pitched a masterful game, facing only one over the minimum in eight innings of work, allowing just two hits, no walks and striking out four. He threw 87 pitches, 61 for strikes.
  • Funneman (1-2), while not as effective, was nearly as efficient, working eight innings of his own on 99 pitches, 64 for strikes. He allowed four runs (two earned) on 10 hits and a walk and struck out three.
  • Wickeri went 3-for-4 and scored a pair of runs. Rodriguez and Bruno each had two hits and drove in a run.
  • The excellent pitching resulted in the quickest nine-inning home game on record at Feinbloom Field at 1:48. The previous record was a 3-0 win over Bentley on Feb. 17, 2007 in 1:51 pitched by Mike Davila and Bobby Hernandez.
  • It was the second sub-two hour game in the last week, as Aiden Denton defeated Post 5-2 on Sunday.
