Buccaneer Volleyball Advances to Regional Semifinal With Five-Set Victory Over NSU

For the third time this season, the Sharks and Bucs go to a five-set thriller

BOCA RATON, Fla.   To no surprise the First Round of the NCAA South Regional between Barry and Nova Southeastern go the distance. This marks the third time this season both teams go five-sets in their match. Barry gets the reverse sweep in order to move to 3-0 over the Sharks this season and advance to the NCAA South Regional Semifinal.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set One - Barry fell in a hole quickly in the first set as NSU drifted away with a seven-point advantage at 12-5. The Bucs were able to go on a 5-0 run to cut the deficit to two earning all five points on four kills and a service ace. Ultimately, Nova Southeastern pulled way to win the set. | Barry 22, Nova Southeastern 25
  • Set Two -  The opposite happened in set two as Barry jumped out to an early lead, with the defense getting two blocks within the first four points. In a back and forth affair, NSU rode a five-point run to regain the lead at 23-21 and take the set from there. Five service aces from the Sharks would be the difference maker. | Barry 22, Nova Southeastern 25
  • Set Three - Things started to turn around in the third set as the errors started to ensue for NSU. Barry capitalized and turned the moment with a big triple block from Diana Akopova, Ivana Žujovic, and Thalia Iglesias to extend their lead by five at 18-13. The momentum stayed of the side of the Bucs as they picked up their first set win to force a fourth set. There was nine ties and one lead change in the set. | Barry 25, Nova Southeastern 17
  • Set Four - The magic number of five continued to follow the match as a five-point run from Barry set the distance early and held through the rest of the match. Four service aces from the Bucs helped get the Sharks out of rhythm and continue to put the momentum with Barry. Akopova laid down the hammer on the final point to let the fire run into the fifth set. | Barry 25, Nova Southeastern 22
  • Set Five - From the first kill, the energy was set for the Buccaneers to close this out. McKayla Theleus brought the energy off the bench and came up with a big kill to close out four-point stretch and make it 7-2. NSU was able to bring it back into range sending the score at 8-5 for the side-switch. In a mix of kills, blocks, and service aces, another five-point run emersed Barry to a 13-6 advantage, Another triple block set up match point this time with Iglesias, Jeyhlen Thomas, and Varvara Osychenko. Thomas closed the match out with a kill directly from the middle on a assists from Iglesias. | Barry 15, Nova Southeastern 8

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Three of the four sets resulted in a 25-22 score. 
  • Barry won four of the five sets in kills, with a tie in the first set at 16-all.
  • Barry won five of the six major statistical categories 85.5-71.0 in points, 65-55 in kills, 7-6 in service aces, 13-10 in blocks, 56-53 in assists, tying in digs at 67-all. 
  • Osychenko and Akopova both racked up double-doubles. Osychenko had 12 kills, 13 digs, and four blocks. Akopova had 26 kills, 11 digs, and six blocks.
  • Iglesias was a huge boost off the bench picking up a double-double with a team-leading 30 assists and 15 digs while adding four blocks.
  • The Bucs are 54-19 in set wins against SSC opponents this season.
  • This is the 10th match this season that Barry has racked up double-digit blocks.
  • Barry improves to 34-14 in NCAA Tournament play.
ON THE HORIZON:

With the win, Barry advances to play third-seeded Tampa in the NCAA South Regional Semifinal. This match is set to be played at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday evening from the de Hoernle Center.
