Softball Hosts Defending NJCAA Champions For Exhibition

MIAMI SHORES, FL. - Getting their final tune-ups in before the 2024 season, the Barry University softball team hosted three-time defending National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Champions Florida Southwestern State for a 10-inning exhibition split over two games on Tuesday evening with the visitors taking both by scores of 5-2 and 10-1.

HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 1)
  • Leading off the bottom of the first with a base on balls, Taylor Thompson touched home plate off an RBI by Caroline Figueroa to give the home Bucs a 1-0 lead.
  •  Florida Southwestern capitalized on a Barry error in the top of the third to advance a baserunner to second who scored on the ensuing double to knot the score before a RBI groundout pushed the visitors ahead 2-1.
  • The visitors extended their lead to 3-1 off a two-out single in the top of the fourth.
  • Florida Southwestern took advantage of a Barry error in the top of the fifth to create a 5-1 score.
  • An error by Florida Southwestern allowed Brooklyn Rushton to reach base, who scored off a Cassandra Lee single to make it 5-2.
NOTEWORTHY (GAME 1)
  • Lee went 1-1 with an RBI and a walk.
  • Figueroa recorded a RBI.
  • Thompson scored a run and drew one walk.
  • Rushton scored a run.
  • Maci Barnhart threw 3.0 innings with five strikeouts.
  • For Florida Southwestern, Sietske Drijvers went 2-2 with two runs scored.
  • Barry recorded two hits, Florida Southwestern tallied six.
  • Both sides recorded two errors, resulting in one run for Barry and three for Florida Southwestern.
  • Barry stranded six runners on base while Florida Southwestern had five.
HOW IT HAPPENED (GAME 2)
  • Three Barry errors in the top of the second allowed seven runs to score for the visitors.
  • Loading the bases with two outs in the bottom of the second, Rushton sent Paige White home off a walk to make it 7-1.
  • Leading off the top of the fourth with a home run, Florida Southwest scored three runs in the stanza to create a 10-1 score.
NOTEWORTHY (GAME 2)
  • White went 1-1 with a run scored.
  • Rushton went 1-1 with a RBI.
  • Samantha Rosenberger struck out three batters over 2.0 innings.
  • For Florida Southwestern, Katey McGee went 2-2 with two RBI.
  • Barry recorded four hits versus eight for the visitors.
  • The Bucs recorded three errors, resulting in four runs scoring.
  • Barry left seven runners on base while Florida Southwestern stranded six.
     
ON THE HORIZON
The 2024 season begins on Friday, Feb. 2 against Catawba at the Flagler Invitational with first pitch set for 1:30 p.m.
