HUNTSVILLE, AL. - The 12th-ranked Barry University volleyball team began play in the UAH Invitational at the University of Alabama-Huntsville on Friday afternoon, overcoming a 2-1 deficit against Montevallo in a 3-2 (25-22, 29-31, 24-26, 25-15, 15-7) before concluding their first two-match day of the season with a 3-0 (25-15, 29-27, 25-18) decision against Trevecca Nazarene

SUMMARY:
Montevallo
- Set 1 - After splitting the opening 30 points of the first set, Barry used a 4-0 run to pull ahead 19-15. Montevallo tried to stage a comeback facing set point, scoring four-straight points to make it 24-22 before the Bucs ended the frame off a Varvara Osychenko kill.
- Set 2 - Montevallo scored the opening two points of the second set and led for the bulk of the stanza, using a 6-2 run midway through the stanza to create a cushion at 11-6. Barry rallied to get within two at 17-15 before taking their first lead of the set at 23-22. Montevallo responded with back-to-back points to take set point, their first of five in the set while Barry moved one point away from taking the stanza twice.
- Set 3 - The Bucs used a 7-0 run midway through the third set to boast a 20-14 advantage. Montevallo cut the lead in half behind a 3-0 spurt, repeating the run after a Barry score forced set point to take a 2-1 overall lead.
- Set 4 - Barry scored the opening point of the fourth set and five of the initial six points of the frame to quickly pull ahead 5-1. Montevallo responded with back-to-back points before a 3-0 retort by Barry extended the lead to 8-3. Barry kept the lead above four for the duration of the stanza to force the fifth-set tiebreaker.
- Set 5 - Barry scored seven of the initial 10 points of the set to hold a 7-3 lead. The Bucs limited Montevallo without a run of consecutive points for the duration of the game.
Trevecca NazareneÂ
- Set 1 - Trevecca scored the opening point of the contest before a 9-2 Barry run quickly created a 9-3 lead. The Trojans rallied to get within two at 10-8, but Barry thwarted the comeback attempt behind a 4-0 run and kept the advantage at five or more for the rest of the frame.
- Set 2 - Trevecca broke open a 4-4 start to the second set with a pair of 3-0 runs sandwiching a Barry point to hold a 10-5 lead. Barry orchestrated a 10-2 run after falling behind 20-12 to knot the score at 22-all, with the two sides trading the ensuing 10 points before back-to-back Buccaneers' scores ended the stanza.
- Set 3 - Barry scored the opening five points of the third set, and 10 of the initial 11, to quickly create a double-digit lead at 11-1. The Bucs led by as many as 17 (19-2) in the stanza, fending off a rally by Trevecca that got them within six with the game-ending point.
NOTEWORTHY:
Montevallo
- Diana Akopova recorded her second double-double of the season behind a 30 kill, 12 dig showing while adding three assisted blocks and two service aces.
- Osychenko established her career-highs with 12 kills on a .442 clip while adding eight digs, two assisted blocks and a pair of service aces.
- Ana Perez recorded a team-best 17 digs.
- Thalia Iglesias tallied a personal-best 53 assists.
- Jeyhlen Thomas assisted on five blocks while adding eight kills.
- Barry hit .325 as a team while holding a 62-49 advantage in digs.
Trevecca NazareneÂ
- Osychenko led all players with 16 kills on top of five service aces and seven digs.
- Perez boasted a season-high 20 digs.
- Akopova chipped in 12 kills with five digs, a solo block and assisted block.
- Iglesias dished out 24 sets with seven digs and four aces.
- Barry eclipsed double-digit service aces for the first time this season with 14.
ON THE HORIZON:
The Buccaneers take on the UAH Invitational host on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1:15 pm before concluding the weekend slate against Anderson University at 5:45 pm.
