MIAMI SHORES, FLA. – On the heels of their first trip to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II National Quarterfinals since 2004, the sixth-ranked Barry University volleyball team opens its 2023 season at the Florida Southern College Volleyball Classic against a pair of programs that advanced to the postseason last year, taking on Flagler College on Friday, Sept. 1 before a clash of top-25 programs in a Saturday, Sept. 2 matchup against 17th-ranked Washburn University.

Barry kicks off its South Region defense after going 28-6 with a 16-4 mark in Sunshine State Conference play. Predicted to finish second in the SSC Preseason Coaches Poll, Barry returns five letterwinners from last season highlighted by reigning American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) National Player of the Year in
Diana Akopova who led the nation in kills (672), points (753.0), kills per set (5.79) and points per set (6.49).
Flagler, who opens its season against Washburn prior to taking on Barry, is coming off a 20-10 campaign that ended in the Southeast Regional. Selected second in the Peach Belt Conference preseason poll, the Saints return All-Southeast Region Honorable Mention honoree and First-Team All-PBC member Jordan Berglin.
A late addition to Barry's schedule after Grand Valley State was unable to make the trip due to Hurricane Idaalia, Washburn treks to the Sunshine State following a 24-8 campaign that ended in the Central Region Championships after winning the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) Championship. Predicted for a fourth-place finish in their Preseason Coaches Poll, the Ichabods bring back eight from last season including AVCA All-America Honorable Mention honoree Jalyn Stevenson.
