Baseball Advances To Super Regional With 11-6 Win Over Argos

Barry will face either Tampa or Rollins in Super Regional

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers pounded out 12 hits and took advantage of five Argonaut errors to win the South Region 2 championship on Saturday 11-6 over host West Florida at Jim Spooner Field.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:

SUMMARY:

  • B1: Barry started with a bang, sending 10 men to the plate against three Argonaut pitcher in the first inning to score five runs on five hits. Braden Forchic, Joe Stella, Kevin Noriega and Jake Ogden all had RBI singles.  | Barry 5, UWF 0
  • B3: Savi Delgado singled and stole second and scored on a base hit by Matthew Menendez. | Barry 6, UWF 0
  • T4: After getting only one base runner in the first three innings, the Argonaut exploded for five runs in the fourth, highlighted by a three-run homer from Mike Scordo. | Barry 6, UWF 5
  • B5: Brandon Sanchez led off the fifth with a double and scored on a ground ball by Menendez. | Barry 7, UWF 5
  • B8: Barry took advantage of a pair of Argonaut errors to score four unearned runs. Menendez reached on an error byb third baseman Pretson Moore and Freddy Rodriguez came on to run for him. One out later, Christian Maceda slapped a single to center to put runners on the corners. Both moved up on a wild pitch by UWF's Jacob Heath, who was lifted for closer Chase Wilkerson. Wilkerson walked Stella one out later and Noriega drilled a double down the right field line, scoring Maceda. Stella and Noriega both came home when the throw from right fielder Dean Hotz skipped past Moore at third. | Barry 11, UWF 5
  • T9: The Argos mounts one last rally in the ninth, with Darrien McDowell delivering an RBI single. But Federico Zapata closed out the game, getting Hotz to pop up to catcher Steven Nitch to end the game. | Barry 11, UWF 6

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Nick Vanderhoef (1-1) who came on in relief, went four innings, holding West Florida to a run on two hits and a walk to get the win for the Bucs. 
  • Zapata worked the eighth and ninth innings, giving up a run on three hits, but closing out the game for his ninth save.
  • Parker Wakeman (0-1), who came into the game having thrown 7.2 innings with an 11.74 ERA on the season, did not record an out but gave up three runs on two hits and a walk to the three batters face.
  • Jacob Heath kept the Argonauts in the game with seven innings of relief, allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks in a season-high outing.
  • Every Buccaneer batter delivered at least one hit and either scored a run or drove in one.
  • Wickeri, Maceda and Noriega each had two hits.
  • Maceda, Stella and Delgado each scored two runs, while Noriega and Menendez drove in two each.

ON THE HORIZON:

Barry will face the winner of South Region 1, either host Tampa or Rollins, in the Super Regional next weekend. The Spartans need to beat the Tars twice.
