Buccaneers advance to sixth-straight championship match

ORLANDO, Fla. (NCAA Semifinal)--  The third-ranked and fourth-seeded Barry University Buccaneers eliminated the top-seeded, second-ranked, and previously undefeated Valdosta State University Blazers with a 4-1 win in the semifinal round of the 2023 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida. The three-time defending champion Buccaneers advance to their sixth-straight final and will play Columbus State University Cougars for the title tomorrow at 7 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Buccaneers won two of the three doubles matches; Tim Büttner and David Rieme racing to a 6-2 decision at third spot.
  • Barry led 3-1 through the first four games in all three doubles matches.
  • Alejandro Ibañez Gallego and Arnau Rodriguez fell at first doubles to Luca Mack and Rodrigo Carvalho.
  • Alejandro Palacios and Alessandro Giuliato clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 score at second.
  • Alessandro Giuliato won his sixth-straight singles match and has winning decisions in all five NCAA postseason matches for the Buccaneers. His 6-2, 6-2 score at third singles gave Barry a 2-0 advantage.
  • Tim Büttner won in straight sets as well (7-5, 6-1) for a 3-0 Buccaneer lead.
  • Christian Wedel gave the Blazers hope with his 6-3, 6-2 win over Arnau Rodriguez at fourth singles.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • For Barry, it is their sixth in a row and the 15th time overall to advance to the NCAA finals. The 15 appearances in the championship match are an NCAA record, extending their own mark. Lander is second with eight, while West Florida and Hawai'i Pacific each have six.
  • Barry has won six national championships, including the last three in a row, and has 29 tournament appearances.
  • The Bucs are currently tied for third all-time in championships (Lander - 8; Southern Illinois-Edwardsville - 7, UC - Irvine - 6 [all of Irvine's titles came before match play started in 1983]).
  • Barry meets Columbus State for the title for the fourth time in the last five championships. The Cougars won in 2018, while Barry took home the titles in 2019 and 2021.
  • The Bucs and Cougars have not met on the court since March 6, 2022, when CSU won a regular-season match 4-3 in Orlando, Fla., at the USTA Training Center. Barry had previously defeated CSU that year, 4-3, in the finals of the 2022 ITA Indoor Championships.
  • Barry has won 11 straight matches including six against ranked opponents; twice defeating No. 1 Saint Leo and now knocking off No. 2 Valdosta State.

Fourth-seeded Barry University advances to face third-seeded Columbus State in the championship match on Monday, May 15, with first serves at 7 p.m.
