HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • The Buccaneers took two doubles matches quickly while leaving the third unfinished with a 4-3 lead.
  • Alejandro Palacios and Alessandro Giuliato got the first win at second doubles, 6-1, while Alejandro Ibañez Gallego and Arnau Rodriguez finished with the same score at first doubles.
  • Tim Büttner and Alessio Demichelis fought back from a 3-1 deficit at third doubles to grab a 4-3 advantage on the final changeover before the top two matches finished.
  • Giuliato controlled the match at first singles from the start and won handily (6-0, 6-0).
  • The Bucs won the first set in five of six singles matches with second singles still undecided heading into a tiebreak for the first set.
  • David Rieme held serve for the final point in his match at fourth singles (6-2, 6-1).
  • Bastien Rieme clinched the team victory with his straight-set triumph at sixth singles.

FROM THE HIPP (Quoting head coach Thomas Hipp):

"I am happy with the way my team has done today. We were focused from the very first point until the end, and were able to play the match with nine players to spread the workload. I hope we have the same focus and determination tomorrow for our quarterfinal match versus Wayne State."

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry has won six national championships, including the last three in a row.
  • Nine different Bucs factored into today's lineup; half of each doubles pairing played singles -- Giuliato, Rodriguez, Demichelis went "double" duty - with Bastien and David Rieme joining Adam Lynch in the singles action.
  • The Buccaneers have won nine straight matches including four where they have not allowed the opponent to get a winning point.

ON THE HORIZON

Fourth-seeded Barry University advances to face fifth-seeded Wayne State in a quarterfinal match; it will be the fourth match in the last 14 months between the Buccaneers and the Warriors. Barry leads the series, 2-1, and won 5-2 as recently as March 23, 2023.
