Taylor Thompson triples and homers in doubleheader

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry University softball team recognized members of the 1998 NCAA Division II Finalists, with several former players in town for the 25th anniversary season, before No. 23 University of Alabama Huntsville swept the Buccaneers in a non-league doubleheader on Saturday (5-2 and 10-4) at Buccaneer Field on the Miami Shores campus.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Haelee Angelico pitched all seven innings in the opener for the Bucs while Katie Bracken went the distance for the Chargers.
  • Maci Barnhart started the nightcap for Barry and Angelico finished.
  • UAH used four pitchers during the 10-4 victory: starter Megan Shurtz was followed by Kaylee Hawkins, Grace O'Berry, and Josie Thompson.
  • Taylor Thompson drove in two runs with a pair of extra base hits, a triple and a solo homerun.
  • Megan Shurtz started on the mound for UAH, turning in 3.0 innings with two runs allowed for a no-decision.
  • Lawryn Hayes excelled out of the lead-off spot in game two on Saturday, as she went a perfect 5-for-5 with four runs and one RBI. One of Hayes' four base hits went for a triple in the top of the third.
  • The Chargers were also adept on the base paths against the Bucs, posting seven steals as a team led by Hayes and Bryson with two each.

Barry hosts No. 12 Valdosta State on Sunday, February 5 at Buccaneer Field (11 a.m.).
