No. 1 Sharks Eliminate Buccaneer Men's Basketball

14-0 run at start of second half seals the deal for top seed

DAVIE, Fla. -- The Barry University men's basketball team played at nearby Nova Southeastern University against the nation's top-ranked team and lost, 106-71, in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) tournament action Tuesday evening at the Rick Case Arena in Davie, Florida. In the history of the SSC postseason, no eighth seed has ever upset the top seed in men's basketball.

  • 1H - The top-seeded hosts outscored the Buccaneers by 17 in the opening period. The Buccaneers led briefly, 4-2, before the Sharks went on a 24-8 run and maintained a double-digit advantage the rest of the way following a layup by Lukas Speidel at 11:13. Malik Stanley and Tyler Hawkins logged 19 and 16 minutes, respectively, and both chipped in seven points in the half.   • 2H - The Sharks left no doubt they would not let up in the second half, starting the final 20 minutes on a 14-0 run. Stanley, Anderson, and Isaiah Washington each had two baskets from long range. Shane Hunter's layup at 3:52 gave the Sharks their largest lead in the contest (44 points; 98-54). NOTEWORTHY:

  • Malik Stanley led the Buccaneers in scoring with 19 points on 7-for-14 from the floor including three 3-pointers and 2-for-2 from the line.
  • Nick Anderson also had three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points.
  • Tyler Hawkins joined the double-digit scoring brigade and made all four of his free throws.
  • The Sharks converted 23 Buccaneer turnovers into 29 points; just four points for Barry off six turnovers from Nova Southeastern.
  • Nova Southeastern beat Barry on the boards by six, 41-35, including 13 from the offensive glass.
  • The Sharks had a whopping 46 bench points.
  • Three Bucs finished with six rebounds apiece - Amari Haynes, Isaiah Washington, Jaron Williams.
