The 10th Class Of the Wall of Honor Is A Special One

Eight members join the illustrious wall

MIAMI SHORES, Fla.—Barry University Athletics announces the Tenth Class of the Wall of Honor, one of the Buccaneers’ most cherished athletic traditions, which will be officially inducted in a ceremony on January 25, 2024.

Six student-athletes and two coach/administrators represent the cream of the crop for Buccaneer Athletics. They totaled 16 All-America awards, two Scholar or Academic All-America awards, two Sunshine State Conference players of the year, and two SSC freshmen of the year. The coach/administrators amassed three national awards, 21 SSC awards and numerous regional awards.

The Tenth Class includes, in chronological order based on the conclusion of their Barry careers, Judy Street (women's golf), Johanna Jattan (née Fischer) (women's soccer), Ildiko Csordas (women's tennis), Yan Gomes (baseball), Amber Jack (softball), Johnny Rodrigues (men's soccer), Dr. George Samuel (tennis) and Dr. Eileen McDonough (faculty athletics representative.

Judy Street earned WGCA Scholar All-America honors in 2002 while leading the Buccaneers to a runner-up finish at the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament. She was the top finisher for the Bucs at the national championship, placing eighth. A member of the Hall of Fame at the University of Miami, where she won the individual national championship in 1959, she became the oldest student-athlete to compete in an NCAA championship. 

One of the best keepers in Sunshine State Conference women’s soccer history, Johanna Jattan (née Fischer) was named to the SSC Hall of Fame in 2012. A four-time First-Team All-Conference performer, she earned NSCAA All-America honors in 2002. She led the Bucs to four straight NCAA tournament appearances, including two regional championships, one final four and one quarterfinal appearance. When she graduated, she held SSC records for shutouts, goals against average and save percentage.

A seven-time Intercollegiate Tennis Association All-American, four in singles and three in doubles, Ildiko Csordas ranks ninth on the school’s all-time singles victories list with 58 and is tied for 11th in doubles wins with 68. The SSC Freshman of the Year in 2005, she won both singles and doubles titles at the ITA regionals during her career.

Yan Gomes was the Bucs first First-Team baseball All-American, leading Barry to their first ever Sunshine State Conference Championship in 2009. The Sunshine State Conference Player of the Year, he set school records for longest hitting streak in a season (30 games), multi-hit games (30), multi-RBI games (23), RBI (92) and total bases (172) in his one season in The Shores. A twelve-year MLB veteran, he made his Major Leagues debut with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2012, becoming the first Brazilian-born player in MLB history, and played a key role in the Washington Nationals World Series run in 2019.

One of the most accomplished pitchers in Barry softball history, Amber Jack earned All-America honors in 2008 and 2009. In addition, she was the SSC and NCAA South Region Pitcher of the Year in 2008, leading the Bucs to a #1 national ranking and the D-II World Series. She holds school records for wins (91), saves (10), shutouts (50), innings (868.2) strikeouts (756) and fewest walks allowed (0.67). She later served as assistant coach for the softball team for three seasons, helping lead them to a 78-62 record, including 42-33 in the SSC.

Johnny Rodrigues earned All-America honors as the Bucs’ goalkeeper in 2010 and 2011 as well as NSCAA Scholar All-America honors in 2011. Barry’s all-time leader in wins (44), shutouts (28), saves (301) and goalie games played (77), he earned SSC freshman of the year honors in 2009 and earned all-conference honors in 2010, 2011 and 2013. He helped lead the Bucs to the conference regular-season title in 2010 and the tournament championships in 2009 and 2013.

Dr. George Samuel spent over 30 years as a guiding force for Buccaneer tennis, putting programs on the map. He compiled a 588-139 record in 30 years with the men and added a 308-122 record in 18 years with the women. He coached 58 men's tennis All-Americans and 24 more on the women's side. Samuel has been honored as coach of the year by the Sunshine State Conference more than any other coach in league history: 17 times on the men's side and four more on the women's for 21 overall awards. He won 24 SSC Championships, and set an NCAA record by coaching in the national championship match 12 times, winning five titles. The Intercollegiate Tennis Association bestowed regional coach of the year honors nine times, including eight with the men, and national coach of the year for men in 1999 and 2013. 

Serving as the Faculty Athletics Representative for 40 years, and Barry University for 53, Dr. Eileen McDonough helped define what a faculty athletics representative should be. She literally wrote the book on the duties and responsibilities that the NCAA provides to all first-time FARs. She served on a variety of NCAA and FARA committees, including the Executive Committee and Legislative Review Committee, participating in decisions on deregulation, amateurism, eligibility, academic standards, international student enrollment.
