Men's Soccer Trounces Railsplitters To Advance To Third Round

Berruezo and Stoffle each score twice

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The fourth-seeded Barry Buccaneers trounced the fifth-seed Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters 5-1 in the second round of the NCAA Division II men's soccer tournament at Buccaneer Field on Saturday night.

SUMMARY:

  • 10:25 - The Bucs got on the board first by demonstrating how dangerous they can be on set pieces. On the Bucs' first corner of the game, Oier Calvillo served a perfect ball into the box, finding the head of 6-5 Iker Berruezo who headed it into the back of the net. | Barry 1, LMU 0
  • 15:50 - Berruezo struck again just five minutes later on another set piece. After Calvillo was fouled near the sideline, Lucas Silva stepped up to take the kick and sent another perfect service into the box, finding Berruezo's head for the goal. | Barry 2, LMU 0
  • 19:53 - The Railsplitters' Igor Goncalves pulled down Barry's Scott Neil as he went to spin around him in the box and David Polanco stepped up to convert the ensuing penalty. | Barry 3, LMU 0
  • 25:02 - Neil created the Bucs' fourth goal, chipping a cross to the far post where Peekay Stoffle slid in to poke it home. | Barry 4, LMU 0
  • 72:49 - Stoffle scored the final goal as well. Juan Simoniello dribbled the ball across the top of the box and passed to to Nicolas Villalobos. Villalobos dropped it down to Stoffle who settled in and fired it into the upper left corner of the goal. | Barry 5, LMU 0
  • 74:20 - Barry's João Camargos jumped over the back of LMU's Daniel Burko, dragging him to the ground. Burko converted the penalty for his 20th goal of the season. | Barry 5, LMU 1 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry out-shot the 'Splitters 18-7, including 9-5 on goal.
  • Rafael Furlani had four saves to earn his 13th win of the season.
  • Dan Benedek Miklosi also had four saves, but gave up five goals to take the loss.
  • Berruezo joined Polanco with multiple games of more than one goal. He scored two against Eckerd as well.
  • Stoffle's brace made the third different Buccaneer to tally more than one goal in a game this season. 
  • The Bucs have won all three meetings with the Railsplitters in Miami Shores, while LMU won the only meeting in Harrogate. 

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs will face the top-seeded Limestone Saints in the third round, after Limestone dispatched Clayton State 2-0 on Saturday.
