Volleyball Upended By Embry-Riddle

MIAMI SHORES, FL. - Facing elimination on Friday evening, the Barry University volleyball rallied behind four-straight kills from Diana Akopova to get within one before Embry-Riddle scored the final point in a 3-0 (25-21, 25-15, 25-23) Sunshine State Conference setback.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Set 1 - Barry responded to a 2-0 start by Embry-Riddle with an equal run before five-straight points to pull ahead 7-2. The Buccaneers rallied back from a 17-8 deficit to get within one at 19-18, but ERAU held Barry without a run of consecutive points for the rest of the frame.
  • Set 2 - Barry scored the initial four points of the second set, only for a 5-0 response by Embry-Riddle propelling them to an early 5-4 edge. Embry-Riddle used a 9-0 run midway through the stanza to force set point, clinching the frame after back-to-back Barry tallies.
  • Set 3 - Embry-Riddle scored the opening four points and never trailed in the third set. ERAU forced match point at 24-19, withstanding a 4-0 Barry rally that made it 24-23 to end the contest.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Akopova ended the night with 12 kills and five digs.
  • Varvara Osychenko chipped nine kills with six digs, a service ace and assisted block.
  • Fiona Baker dished out 27 assists with eight digs.
  • Ana Perez anchored the defense behind 12 digs.
  • Ivana Zujovic tallied three assisted blocks with one solo block.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Buccaneers host Nova Southeastern University on Tuesday, Oct. 10 with first serve slated for 7 p.m.
