Men's Tennis Moves on to the National Semifinals

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The second-ranked and third-seeded Barry Buccaneers powered to a 4-1 victory over the #12 UIndy Greyhound at the 2022 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championship at Sanlando Park on Thursday to advance to the national semifinals.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

  • Barry's Giuliato and Cazaban, made short work of Gerweck and Franca 6-0 at number three doubles. 
  • Forcano and Gutierrez, the 19th-ranked duo in D-II, clinched the doubles point for the Bucs with a 6-3 win over Faveri and Talimaa at number one.
  • At number two, Barry's 21th-ranked pair of Rodriguez and Gallego went unfinished with UIndy up 5-3.
  • In singles, the Bucs won five of six first sets. 
  • UIndy's Destouet, ranked #72, beat #7 Palacios 6-3, 6-2 to tie things up, at number one.  
  • But Forcano quickly ripped through Faveri 6-3, 6-2, at number four. to put the Bucs back on top
  • Ibañez Gallego, ranked #13, made it 3-1 with a 6-4, 6-0 win over #24 Talimaa at number two.
  • Giuliato, ranked #23, clinched the match with a 6-4, 6-4 over #51 Yoann at number three.
  • The other matches went unfinished.

NOTEWORTHY: 

  • For Barry, it is their fourth in a row and the 17th time overall to advance to the NCAA semifinals.
  • Barry has won five national championships, including the last two in a row, and has 26 appearances. The Bucs are currently fourth all-time in championships (Lander - 8; Southern Illinois-Edwardsville - 7, UC - Irvine - 6).
  • Forcano leads the Bucs with 18 singles wins this season, followed by Rodgiuez (13) and Palacios (12).
  • It was the fourth time that the Bucs and Greyhounds had met on the courts. The last time was last year at the semifinals of the 2021 NCAA Championship, with the Bucs taking a victory of 4-1. 

ON THE HORIZON

The Bucs will take on the No. 6 Flagler Saints in the semifinals of the NCAA DII Championship match on Saturday, May 21. The Saints upset second-seeded Hawai'i Pacific 4-2 in the quarterfinals.
