The Seventh Annual Bucky Awards

Back in person for the first time in three years

7th Annual Bucky Award Winners

Barry University Athletics hosted the Seventh Annual Bucky Awards on Wednesday, April 27, 2022, live and in person for the first time in three years.

The Bucs celebrated the past year's accomplishments of the student-athletes with awards for Newcomer of the Year, Most Improved Athlete, Career Achievement, Best Game, and Best Play, the Strong Man/Woman Awards, and the Athletic Training Student of the Year. In addition, all 13 teams recognized their team award winners.

Newcomer of the Year

Djuly Smchorantz

Djuly Schmorantz

A junior from Rio Grande Do Sul, Brazil, Schmorantz led the Bucs in kills, points and service aces this season, and was second on the team in digs and serve receptions. She was second in the Sunshine State Conference in kills and points per set, earning First-Team All-SSC. 

Most Improved Athlete    

Cassandra Lee

Cassandra Lee

A sophomore from Melrose Park, Ill., Lee helped lift the Bucs to a winning record with both her bat and her arm. She dropped her ERA from 4.43 to 1.61 and her walks from 5.34 per game to 1.36 per game. She also tossed the first no-hitter for the Bucs since 2015 in beating Lynn 3-0. Offensively, she went from not in the lineup to being one of the top hitters for the team, slashing .338/.480/.429 through the first 33 games.

Comeback Player of the Year

Maddie Hart-Pomerantz

Maddie Hart-Pomerantz

After sitting out a season due to the uncertainty around the pandemic, Hart-Pomerantz returned to the Bucs to start 15 games between the pipes with a 1.09 goals against average, an 81.8 save percentage and four shutouts, all top-10 in the conference. She achieved one of her goals by signing her first professional contract with Odense Q in the Danish Professional League after the season.

Career Achievement

Jil Engelmann

Jil Engelmann

Engelmann helped lead the Bucs to back-to-back NCAA Division II National Championships in 2019 and 2021 and the ITA Indoor Championships in 2020 and 2022. A two-time All-American and Sunshine State Conference player in singles, she has a career record of 45-4. In doubles, she has been named All-SSC once, compiling a 51-6 mark. In addition, she has already earned an MBA at Barry and is currently working on her EdD in educational leadership. She is a three-time ITA Scholar All-American and member of the SSC Commissioner's Honor Roll.

Best Game

Varsity 4 at HOCR

Rowing, Varsity 4+, Silver at the  at the Head of the Charles

The Bucs returned to the top of the rowing world by taking a silver medal at the prestigious Head of the Charles, the largest regatta in the world. The Bucs finished second out of 32 crews in the women's collegiate fours. It was Barry's first medal at the regatta since a silver in 2018.

Alice Gotbring

Alice Götbring, 18-yard birdie chip at William Beall Invite

Needing a birdie to win, and with a bad lie after her third shot, Götbring chipped the ball up and over the knoll and downhill into the cup. The birdie claimed the individual title for Götbring and the team title for the Bucs.
