Baseball Routs Sailfish Behind Offensive Onslaught

Bucs score the most run in six years

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers scored early and often in routing the Palm Beach Atlantic Sailfish 18-8 at Feinbloom Field on Friday night in the opening game of their Sunshine State Conference baseball series.

SUMMARY:

  • B1: The Bucs jumped out in front in the first inning and never looked back. Barry sent 11 men to the plate and scored seven runs. The Bucs loaded the bases with one out as Branden Abreu walked and Omar Baldo and Sebastian Garrido followed with singles. The first run came across with PBA starter Eric Petric (1-3) hit Kevin Noriega. Danny Garcia brought in another run with a ground out and Steven Torres re-loaded the bases by beating out an infield single. David Vazquez then doubled into the gap in right center, scoring all three runners. Abreu, in his second appearance of the inning, singled to drive in Vazquez. | Barry 7, PBA 0 
  • T2: The 'Fish trimmed three runs off the lead in the second. Blake Ebo's two-run homer was the big blow. | Barry 7, PBA 3
  • B2: Garrido doubled to left center with one out and scored on a wild pitch. Noriega, who reached on the wild pitch after striking out, scored when Torres beat out another infield single. | Barry 9, PBA 3
  • B3: Baldo, who was hit by reliever Drew Holweger leading off the frame, scored on a wild pitch. | Barry 10, PBA 3
  • T4: Mike Casaleggio reached on an error and scored on Ebo's single. | Barry 10, PBA 4
  • B4: Torres tripled to center off the batter eye and scored on a the front end of a double steal. | Barry 11, PBA 4
  • B5: The Bucs had another big inning in the fifth, sending 12 men to the plate and scoring six runs. The Sailfish walked the bases loaded as Baldo, Ihosvany Castaneda and Garrido drew free passes. Noriega and Jose Tabares followed with back-to-back two-run doubles. Torres, who had his best game of the year at the plate, knocked in Tabares with a single and scored on a fly ball by Abreu. | Barry 17, PBA 4  
  • B6: Noriega walked to lead off the inning and Danny Cunningham and Torres drew walks to move him around to third. Noriega scored on a ground out by Brando Sanchez. | Barry 18, PBA 4
  • T7: The Sailfish took advantage of a couple of Buccaneer miscues to score four in the seventh. Matty Warren singled to lead off the inning and scored when Jiovel Lantigua tripled to center field. Lantigua scored when the Bucs booted a ball on the infield. The Bucs also dropped a fly ball in left. Both runners scored. | Barry 18, PBA 8 

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Arrison Perez (3-3) evened his record with six innings of work. He allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and struck out eight without walking a batter.
  • Chad Baker worked the final three innings to earn his first save. He allowed four runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk.
  • Petric took the loss for the 'Fish. He allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.
  • Barry pounded out 17 hits, led by Torres who went 5-for-5, and added nine walks and two hit batters.
  • Noriega, who was only 1-for-3 but walked twice and was hit by pitch, scored four runs and drove in four others.
  • Garrido continued his torrid hitting, going 2-for-4 with a walk and scoring three runs. 
  • Baldo, Castaneda and Vazquez each had two hits. 
  • Ebo led the Sailfish with two hits, including his homer, and three RBI. 
  • The 18 runs were the most for the Bucs since they beat Rollins 20-9 on Apr. 22, 2016.

ON THE HORIZON:

Game two of the series has been moved up to 10:00 am on Saturday, with impending weather.
