Softball Opens Season On Top Against West Florida

The Bucs beat the Argonauts 5-1.

PENSACOLA, Fla. -- The Barry Buccaneers opened the season on a resounding note, dominating the 17th-ranked West Florida Argonauts 5-1 on Thursday, Feb. 3.

SUMMARY:

  • T1 - Becka Mellor opened action for the Bucs, with a single to center field. Maggie Wheless followed with a double to right, bringing Mellor home. | Bucs 1, Argos 0
  • T2 - The Bucs loaded up the bases with one out, as Payton Germer was hit by a pitch, Skylar Jenkins walked and Courtney Chisholm reached on a bunt single. Mac Stone-Folmar showed off her eye on the next at-bat, drawing a walk and forcing in Germer. | Bucs 2, Argos 0
  • T3 - Wheless found herself on second base after getting hit by a pitch and advancing on an Annabella Phillips groundout. Sofia Chamarro smacked a double into the gap in left center, scoring Wheless and giving the Bucs a three-run advantage. | Bucs 3, Argos 0

  • T4 - The Bucs capped the scoring with a pair in the fourth. Chisholm led off with an infield single and Stone-Folmar followed with a walk. After a sacrifice by Mellor moved the runners to second and third, Wheless dropped down a bunt of her own. The Argos went for the lead runner at home, ut Chisholm slid in safe. NOTEWORTHY:

  • Its the Bucs' first win over a ranked opponent since they knocked off #4 Saint Leo 6-1 on Mar. 4, 2021. Before that, the last time the Bucs logged a ranked win was 13-12 victory over #8 Rollins since Apr. 22, 2017.
  • Maci Barnhart (1-0) let up just one run in seven innings of action on the mound for the Bucs. She scattered four hits and did not walk a batter, striking out two.
  • Kelsey Sweatt took the loss for UWF. The 2019 Third-Team All-American was torched by the Bucs for five runs on five hits, four walks and a hit batter in 4.0 innings. She struck out two.
  • Chisholm had two hits for the Bucs, while Wheless drove in a pair.
  • Howard had two of the four hits for the Argonauts.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs will now continue their road trip to Gulf Shores, Ala., to play five games in the Gulf Coast Invitational starting on Friday, Feb. 4.
