Women's Volleyball Closes Regular Season with Loss at Eckerd

Buccaneers will return to campus to watch NCAA Selection Show

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. -- The #16 Barry University Buccaneers women's volleyball team fell in straight sets (25-21, 29-27, 25-14) at Eckerd College on Sunday afternoon in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action at the McArthur Center. The Bucs finish their regular season at 25-5 overall, and 16-4 in SSC play, a close second behind defending national champion University of Tampa. The Spartans earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division II National Championships while the Buccaneers, Tritons, and other SSC schools await at-large bids in tonight's Selection Show on NCAA.com.

INSIDE THE MATCHUPS:

All-Time Series: Barry leads, 41-19, but Eckerd has won four of the last six meetings.

SUMMARY:

  • 1st set | The Tritons won the first two points and stayed ahead throughout the set. Trailing 21-15, Barry called a timeout and ran off three straight with a kill from Christy Paul, another from Djuly Schmorantz, and a service ace from Mónica LópezMariana Bertrán had one of her team-high 10 kills and followed that with a service ace to pull within three again (23-20), but Eckerd closed out the set with kills from Joelle Coulter and Damyah Joyner. | Barry 21, Eckerd 25
  • 2nd set | The Buccaneers erased a five-point deficit late (20-15) and won six of seven points to tie the score at 21-all following a kill from Marina Azevedo. There were still 14 more points played to decide the set although Barry never had a set-point opportunity all match. | Barry 27, Eckerd 29
  • 3rd set | Mariana Bertrán had the last kill for the Buccaneers to close within two at 15-13, but the Tritons finished the match on a 10-1 run included two service aces from Krysten Garrison and one from Coulter. | Barry 14, Eckerd 25
