Men's Soccer Wins Battle of the Bucs over Christian Brothers

Barry advances to the round of 16

MIAMI SHORES, Fla. -- The top-seeded Barry Buccaneers sprinted past #5 Nova Southeastern Sharks and into the champiosnhip game of the Sunshine State Conference men's soccer tournament at Buccaneer Field on Thursday night.

WHAT THEY ARE SAYING:

SUMMARY:

  • 1:12 - Barry struck first on a goal by Juan Simoniello before the game had settled in. Pascal Sattelberger sent a ball up the right wing and Simoniello banked a shot off a CBU defender and into the goal.  | Barry 1, CBU 0
  • 40:28 - After a corner kick, Iker Berruezo poked a ball past Klink, but Paul Bobai was there to sweep it off the line for CBU.
  • 58:43 - Sattelberger hooked with Simoniello in the 59th minute. Sattelberger's corner kick rolled all the way to the top of the box and Simoniello beat CBU keeper Max Klink to the near post. | Barry 2, CBU 0
  • 60:48 - CBU's Ryan Beckinsale got behind the Barry defense, but his point-blank shot was stopped on a brilliant save by Barry's Nils Buecheler.
  • 64:45 - Just four minutes later, Sattelberger sent a log ball out of the back to Miguel Rodriguez, who got behind the CBU back line. Klink came flying out of the box and flattened Rodriguez after he touched the ball past him, earning a red card and leaving CBU down 2-0 and down a man for the rest of the game.
  • 78:44 - After Rodriguez was fouled just outside the box in the 79th, Lucas Silva's free kick found Jordi Ramon at the far post for a header and a final goal. | Barry 3, CBU 0

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Barry out-shot CBU 21-11 and 9-3 on goal.
  • Nil Buecheler had three saves to record his second clean sheet of the season.
  • Klink too the loss for CBU, making three saves, but allowing two goals before being carded off. Wayne Davis came on in relief and made one save on two shots on goal.
  • The win was the first NCAA Tournament win for Barry since they beat West Chester 2-1 in 2018 for the NCAA National Championship.

ON THE HORIZON:

The Bucs advance to the third round (Round of 16) to face the winner of the Lenoir-Rhyne/Wingate match. Date and time for that game are to be determined.
